Twenty-six bodies have been found bound and gagged in abandoned vehicles in Guadalajara, Mexico.

The bodies were discovered in two vans and a pickup truck near the city’s Millennium Arches and are believed to be those of drug cartel members.

Guadalajara is the second-largest city in Mexico and hosted the Pan American Games in October but is also well known for being at the heart of the methamphetamine trafficking industry, led by the Sinaloa cartel.

Seventeen further bodies were discovered earlier this week in Sinaloa. The victims were found in two pickup trucks and were burned, while some of the bodies were handcuffed and wearing bulletproof vests.

Though the murder rate in Guadalajara dropped during the Pan American Games – largely due to increased police and military presence – there has been a surge in killings lately, leading to fears of territory battles between the Sinaloa and Zetas cartels.

Current UK meets the young men who risk their lives to work as hitmen for drugs cartels in Mexico’s Gun Runners: A Vanguard Special – Friday 25th November at 11pm.
