Mobile phone ringtones act as ‘Taliban visa’ in Afghanistan

CurrentUK
Travellers in Afghanistan are using mobile ringtones as a means of protection from the Taliban while moving around the country, according to a report by Al Jazeera.

The ringtones – which have become known as ‘Taliban visas’ – come into play when travellers pass through Taliban roadblocks and can help deflect any awkward questions during checks.

But those hoping to avoid interrogation by the Taliban need to take care that neither the ringtone nor the data on their handset shows any connection that might land them in trouble with government officials if they are stopped further along their journey.

Watch the report from Al Jazeera’s Bernard Smith for the full story.
