North Korea’s late leader Kim Jong-il has been embalmed so he can lie in state permanently alongside his father in Pyongyang.

Jong-il – who died of a heart attack in December 17th 2011 – is expected to go on display in the Kumsusan memorial palace where he originally went on public view ahead of his funeral.

As well as preserving Jong-il, North Korea’s central committee plans to put up ‘smiling portraits’ of him and build ‘towers to his immortality’ at a number of sites across the country. In a further tribute, Jong-il’s birthday – February 16th – has been named the ‘Day of the Shining Star.’

Jong-il joins a line of Communist leaders who have been embalmed – the first being Lenin in 1924 – including Stalin, Mao Zedong and Ho Chi Minh.
