It’s too early in the contest to make such a decision, but Mitt Romney is likely to pick a governor as his running mate, he told some South Carolinians tonight.
Speaking with voters in a teleconference call, the Republican presidential candidate said he felt partial to state governors due to their “leadership experience.”
A call participant who identified herself as Tricia from Hanahan asked Romney who’d be his Vice President, stating the topic of running mates was the only category she’d yet to hear from candidates.
“I’ll give you some names I’ll consider,” he continued, mentioning incumbent governors Brian Sandoval (Nev.), Susana Martinez (N.M.), Bobby Jindal (La.), Bob McDonald (Va.), Mitch Daniels (Ind.) Chris Christie (N.J.), and South Carolina’s own Nikki Haley, who’s been traveling the state with Romney after endorsing him.
Romney also named former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty and Haley Barbour, who recently ended his last term as governor of Mississippi.
Other, non-gubernatorial candidates he’d consider are U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.), former U.S. Sec. of State Condoleeza Rice, FOX News commentator and former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, and CIA director David Petraeus.
Romney did stipulate it was too soon for him to name a definite running mate, though.
“Because I’m not the nominee yet, it would be presumptuous to say.”
