Activists have made their way to Tahrir Square in Cairo to mark the first anniversary of the protests that led to the downfall of Egypt’s long-term ruler Hosni Mubarak.
Protesters will be staging a sit-in in the square both to commemorate the uprising and to show their determination to achieve the original goals of the revolution.
Novelist and democracy campaigner Alaa al-Aswani said those goals are to “live in dignity, bring about justice, try the killers of martyrs and achieve minimum social justice.”
Egypt’s military has planned mass celebrations to mark the one year anniversary, including a naval parade in Alexandria, air shows in Cairo and fireworks displays at a number of locations across the country.
In recent days the military council has pardoned around 3,000 prisoners held in Cairo’s Tora prison, though this move has been seen by some as an attempt to appease reformist demands.
