What Would Sharia Do? - Interview with the Producer

CurrentUK
Current wants to look behind the sensationalist headlines and explore the workings of Islamic sharia courts in the UK, inviting newcomers to Islam with experience of divorce in the civil courts to engage in a hearing with our panel of Imams. Is anything to learn from a different cultural and religious perspective, or is sharia law, as some claim, incompatible with the values of a western liberal democracy?

What Would Sharia Do? premieres Tuesday 25th October at 9pm as part of Open Season.

Hi Hattee - in this show we're looking at sharia as it already exists in this country - dealing with Islamic divorces and as a form of mediation or arbitration that Muslims (or non-Muslims) can use to settle civil disputes. So only those who decided to would come under sharia law - although whether this is always a free choice is a matter of debate...

    • Sharia exists already here - if I'm honest I have no idea what it does or means. Maybe this show will enlighten me? I'm reserving opinion until after that

    • Do we really need some other legal system undermining our country's judiciary? If there are areas that are not (or no longer) covered by our laws, eg, adultery, then that is fair enough ... so long as the penalties imposed do not contravene our laws, eg, illegal confinement, extortion, human rights, etc.
