The spirit of the people of South Central shines through in this piece. Their cause is so basic and so important. This is yet another example of the gross discrepancy between the values of our citizens and those the government chooses to protect ($$$)--Thank you for this.

This is one of the most important issues facing Los Angeles - and our urban culture today. How do we heal our communities, our relationship with earth, and our health? This is the answer and as a people we have decided that the monetary value is less than a new development.

to rsburman
rsburman>It really speaks to how important tone can be, especially in such delicate negotiations.
Yes and no. There were low-key negotiations for a years; the owner would not budge, and the City would not help the Farm. While some asked for the land to be given for free, I believe the main negotiations centered around a request for an option to buy.
A price was put out there, but, when the money was raised to purchase the land, the offer was withdrawn. The owner cited racist statements by some Farm supporters, but, according to another account, the owner described himself as a "conservative", and said he withdrew the offer for personal reasons. In Southern California, among the far-right, hating Latino immigrants had become a popular trend, at least on talk radio. In short, the owner was submitting to peer pressure, to go along with the popular racism.
Perhaps that was the reason why the mayor didn't make a strong effort to support: he needed to distance himself from his community, that, month after month, is becoming America's scapegoats for everything that's gone wrong during this war and presidential administration.
Then again, I might be totally wrong. Maybe he just wanted to be friendly with developers. The City Council and Mayor might only be motivated by their dreams of turning downtown into Manhattan West, complete with $700,000 condos, and $30 an hour parking.

The property owner and the City of Los Angeles eliminated a great project, and lost another opportunity to improve the most neglected, most rejected part of the City. There's a shortage of green space in LA. Now with the farm razed, will the city will get another concrete warehouse? This happened under a mayor who is allegedly "liberal" and "green" and a city councilmember who is ostensibly a "Democrat." They seem to want "green" and "liberal" only for the affluent people: for the poor, only more concrete.

I like that it has the possibility to be put on TV. Apparently many folks were not aware of this until the pod. The main message that Urban organic Farms is a necessary tool that benefits any poor community to the right to food and food sovreignty needs to be out there. The struggle behind this particular model should serve as a heads up to those now and in the future who use any land not owned by the community because it always will come to bite us in the ass. The original landowners of California is another story all together. When the Shit hits the fan and Our Mother earth purifies herself over there in LA, All those spineless politicos and developers will wish they had food to eat cuz they won;t be able to eat their money.
I'm no filmmaker so i leave that to others to make suggestions. my point is emphasize the right to food and food sovreignty. Thanks for this good work. - 5 years ago

Ive been reading the hopi prophesys lately and i think this is just the thing that the world needs MORE of. People need to be more self sufficient and the govt of course doesnt want that cause they want us to be sheep more than free thinking self sufficient organic eating people who sustain themselves..
oh. ps.
Plants like when u talk and sing to them, they can hear us, and feel us more than ever. PROVEN FACT. look it up n "secret life of plants", and again in the HOPI Prophesy survival kit. - 5 years ago

This story need to be seen, heard, and appreciated. We need green zones in the city. Poor people need organically grown vegetables. These people matter. This makes their community more cohesive, healthful, and happy. It should have never been bulldozed down. What a tragedy. It must not happen again.

The New Renaissance of Humanity is all over the Planet. Who said Revolutions have to be bloody?
If you want to be a rebel be kind. Human-kind, be both.
South Central Farm is a beautiful example that greenhomes (Greenomes) are possible. It has to become a GAC (Greenome Autarkic Community), with renewal energy, quality education, self-sufficient and yet, connected to the World.
TO BE more or to have more? That's the question.
The Earth is but ONE country and the humankind its citizens.

This is a story that needs to be told nationwide. The City of "Angels" needs to take responsibility for this error in judgment and return the land to the people. In fact, we need more inner city farms - we need to create and support organic farms at every school house, every neighborhood, every church. The time for war against people and nature is over. It is a time to get to know one another and what better way than to grow and share food.

We miss the farm! However long it takes- we will be there to replant- we will be ready. For those few who believe that SCF was not grateful- must never have been to the farm and meet the community; they do not understand. I have in my heart a memory of the plate of food that
I was served- night and day- I was there as a volunteer and this fills my heart... then I remain patient. You know-

South Central Farmers are so inspiring. They are a true grass roots project. It breaks my heart what the city did by destroying the farm. I hope we get together politically to get Jan Perry out of office. I blame her for the back door deal given to the developer. Jan Perry is too business friendly.

While the South Central Farm by itself won't solve all the problems of LA, it was an important effort and has started a movement that can make more of a difference than a lot of the plans of the politicians. The sale of the farm back to the developer was a failure of nerve by the politicians afraid to stand up to the powerful money interests in LA.

As nice and idealistic as this cause sounds, this video in no way shows the other side of the story. That property was being lent out graciously to all of those people and yes something great did come of it, but now it is the peoples' turn to thank the landowner for lending it to them and let them sell it rightfully. We don't live in a communist country, so when it's time to get out, it's time to get out. They shouldn't tell the landowner what to do with their land.

This is what happens when the press does not place proper emphasis on issues that affect true quality of life. If we have less Hollywood fluff and more investigative journalism, the world might be a better place. Thanks for showing us these vignettes from the human perspective. While I do think the material could have been better structured with a clear through-line, it still deserves to be greenlit for the simple fact that these people and their struggle should be heard world-wide.
