Iraq's Refugees in the Shadows

jennyjo
Tens of thousands of Iraqis are fleeing the violence of the war each month. Most are seeking refuge in nearby Syria and Jordan.

These refugees are not wandering through the desert, nor living in tent cities, as you might expect. Rather, they are integrating into urban areas, and without legal resident status, they must either blend in or face deportation.

This is the story of one such family living in Jordan’s capital, Amman. Once proprietors of a Baghdad jewelry shop, this 18-member family now struggles to run their lives out of a three-bedroom apartment. Although free from the sectarian violence that has engulfed Iraq, they still face an uncertain future.

    • I appreciate this.

I really like the indy perspectives on Iraq. My Kurdish friend is afraid for her relatives who are stuck throughout the Middle East including Iraq. I have made a pod about her and the problem of Honor Killings of women. Thnx.

    • This piece touches the heart. You've got raw material, especially with subject matter coming from the girl who saw her father killed, and now she is pouring her heart out over camera. This is intense. You've spoken for those who cannot speak for themselves. I admire this piece, your work, and your heart. I see the compassion being oozed out and I appreciate this sense of urgency that I see in this pod. I'd like to see this air, and I thank you for your support through Voice of the Murmurs and Journey of Hope. I'd help you speak out for those who cannot anytime. Peace. Cheers.~ One thought, is that you may want to consider changing your web photo that is displayed for this video on Current. If you could capture some other photograph that may be a bit more detailed. Just something to check out in my personal opinion. Great shots, great child shots, and your work is on the edge and needed . Thank you. Peace~ Danielmklopp~ GL

    • Irag refuges is a subject we do not hear much about. This is a personal story with emotional impact. This is a definite news worthy story and I feel it is important to get it out for general viewing.
