Hey! Yeah, this was awesome to watch. I always love it when parents speak to their children like they're equals - it's much easier to talk/communicate/exist with these kids, for obvious reasons, and in my opinion.
Very refreshing video. It made me Smile, with a capital S.

What a gorgeous baby + the relationship is touching. Honestly I thought that the demonstration of "cold" at the end was so strong that the one that followed of "bug" seemed like a bit of a stretch --- she almost seemed like she was doing "funny" --- but this is a tiny thing. Big old enthusiastic green light from me.

Hi aldadio,
The flashcards in the video are from sign2me.com but you can buy flashcards or books from ebay or amazon.com. However, I highly recommend getting pure ASL flashcards and not ones that are a mix of ASL and 'made-up' signs. There is a huge benefit to teaching a real language to our babies. And believe me, they are smart enough to learn :) - 4 years ago

I am greenlighting the topic but I do feel it would be worth the time to alter it a bit. My biggest issue was the beginning...the baby is absolutely adorable but the constant shot of her with the cards got to be stagnant and I began to lose interest. I don't think it is the most effective way to engage your audience. I wanted to see the host sooner - addressing us face to face from the start. Maybe you could begin with the two of you. Let us see you as you introduce the pod and then move back to the shots of your daughter with the cards to demonstrate her ability.
As stated by RalstonD below, it would be interesting to see other sides of this debate and what parents go through to teach ASL to babies. But, I think those are separate pods in and of themselves. You don't have enough time in this one to get into all of that. Maybe you can produce pods about those topics in the future. I would definitely watch them. : )

My Mac crashed when i was writing my production comment (why I voted 'no'). So let me make the production comments here in this forum.
This is a fascinating subject, and one I wish I knew about when my baby was born (he is now 4). But what this film shows: that babies can learn to sign; is perhaps not enough. I learned more from reading the description than I did from the film. Apart from showing the mother and baby it would be interesting to see an interview one of the doctors who promote this technique and let them tell the story of Dr. Garcia (or go interview Dr. Garcia himself).
Also, as one of the posters mentioned above, why not raise the issue of how difficult (or not) it is for the parents to learn ASL first. Are there classes specifically for parents (with a baby centric vocabulary)? How long does it take? Go to one of the classes and interview a parent: how are they finding learning ASL: easy, difficult?
Even go interview somebody who disagrees with the process. The presence of some disagreement can often hold viewers interest and allow you to develop important point without resorting to 'exposition'.
I feel that there is a lot more you can do with this film before it goes live. And given the subject matter, it would be well worth the time.

Any parent can learn these signs because they are taken directly from American Sign Language (ASL). I don't support the idea that we have to make up signs for babies to use that are 'easier' than ASL signs because that would be underestimating what your baby is capable of and they are capable of more than we once thought! I also 100% support the use of ASL instead of made-up signs as a respect thing to Deaf culture. We are using their language so we should respect their language as a whole.
So yes, any parent can learn with their babies and if they forget they can easily look up the sign in a book or online :)
Great question and thank you for the GL!

I know many families who use this method and personally I find it fascinating! It clarifies how many billions of tiny but intelligent human beings were mistaken for rugrats!
Here's the one question I don't see mentioned though: Can all the parents learn all these signs to teach it to their babies? Even if you make these up yourself, it's gotta be hard to remember them as well as the little monster!
GL from me! Everyone should know about this! It should air during Super Bowl! :) - 4 years ago

We had some success in teaching ASL to our daughter but like most things, she does it on her terms (she just wanted to start talking). I liked the fact that this little one is obviously quite proud of herself and of pleasing her mom. This sense of accomplishment is a big deal at this age. I also liked the way that "nuance" is established as being ok as far as allowing her interpretation of the signs to stand as legitimate. Very cool!
Overall very lovely piece especially considering the largely ambient lighting. Bravo!

BooksBrown, you have such great questions on the topic and I really appreciate them.
It is very easy for parents who have no knowledge of sign language to teach their babies. Basically, when you teach babies sign language you are taking specific signs from the language to use. You are not teaching them all of the grammar and syntax that goes along with the language. So, if someone doesn't know sign language it is very easy for them to learn as they go along with their babies. It is also a beautiful language and I would encourage anyone to learn it.
It is very useful for school aged children as well as babies. There have been several studies showing that the use of ASL can help to improve vocabulary in children who are having difficulty spelling and reading. There was one study where children were having difficulty spelling (test scores ranging from 25--46% words spelled correctly). The researchers taught the students the manual alphabet and used finger spelling to learn their spelling words. These students spelling scores improved to a range of 56-90%. In quite a few cases there was 100% improvement. Clearly those students were more visual and kinesthetic in their learning styles and the use of sign language aided them in their learning. I am a HUGE believer of the benefits of using ASL with hearing children. I have a program that I introduce to schools as an in-house presentation and the children always show such facination with learning about the language (grades k-6). Schools seem to be starting to embrace the idea.
I thank you very much for your questions, I want more people to be interested in this topic!

Good question about language acquisition. It doesn't inhibit it that way, in fact it seems to do the opposite. My daughter is now 18 months and is talking in full sentence. She can also say her a,b,c's now from start to finish and has been doing it since she was 16 months old. You can see a video of her abc skills if you are interested here: link
In this video she was 13 months . I lecture at Universities on the topic of using sign language with hearing children and using it to promote literacy. Many studies have shown that using finger spelling to learn words actually help with spelling skills and in return leads to improved reading skills. I am doing a study on this in the fall.
Thanks for your question!

WOW! It was almost shocking to see how truly developed the baby is, in particular how she recognizes letters. The whole concept of what a "letter" is normally comes to children years later! Teaching ASL enriches baby's world but what is more important, it turns additional algorithm of early brain development. After all, the ASL comes to her naturally as a second (yet native) language, so to speak - what a great thing to have! My parents taught me reading skills early in my life and by the age of 4 reading books was my hobby (I remember all of them!) So, my straight "A" years through the high school and great achievements in professional engineering career were direct result of starting early, I know that for sure. Good job on the video! GL
