Nicky's Tea

eleni
Nicky Perry arrived in New York City from England when she was 21. Appalled by the terrible tea and reputation of British food, she started her own cafe and restaurant. More than 15 years on, it has become the hub of British life in the Big Apple: for the British expat community, singles wanting to find British love, American Anglophiles and British celebrities in town alike - and most importantly it's the place to go for a good cup of English tea.

    • Good piece but lets not get carried away. British food is generally terrible. This works because who and disagree with tea, cake or fish and chips? The rest is pretty rubbish.

    • Congratulations eleni on getting accepted for TV. I liked this piece very much. I used to work just down the street and didn't know about this place. I lived in London for 3 years so I'll check it out. Emmm... eggs, beans & toast.

If you have 5 minutes, please check out Drawn For Life for a Green Light consideration.

Looking forward to seeing more from you eleni.
      Peace, Morgan

    • I'm Irish, married to and English woman and we live in New York City. Even I took offense to the notion that English food was crap. It's nonsense. It's somewhat arrogant for Americans to perpetuate such a notion given that Americans are the fattest people on the planet. Having said that, however, the Irish are now second and the English not far behind.
I must say for the record that I miss English supermarket food. It's of the highest quality of any place I've been to and I've traveled a lot.
Please see my film while your at it.
      Thanks.

    • fascinating - i can't believe 17 british couples have met here...! could've been a bit shorter, and some of the interviews seem to be more cutaway then actual interviews, but i really like the overall pace and love the story you tell

    • Great topic but I think a bit long. Maybe cut down some of the walking around at the beginning and get to the heart of the story sooner. Shorten the sound bits a touch.

Loved how you used the freeze frame to title Nicky.

    • Hi Everyone,

Sean, from Tea & Sympathy here, not long after this report was filmed we launched "The Campaign For Little Britain" which is an idea to get our block named Little Britain in recognition of all the work we have done for the neighborhood as well as protect small businesses like ours from the 4x increase in rents landlords are now asking for. Small, local businesses like ours create the personality and diversity of the neighborhood but we are all under threat from the homogeneous global brands that are driving the rents up.

To date over 5000 people have signed the petition online at www.campaignforlittlebritain.com PLEASE GO AND ADD YOUR NAME NOW!!

Also we made a little film too which you can watch here link

      Cheers!

      Sean

    • I really liked the video but seems many people mention it is a bit long for them. Perhaps you could start straight of at the cresendo and begin at Tea & Sympathy and cut the getting there scenes like taking the taxi and stuff.

Your next video could be about Tea & Crumpet!

    • Nice pod! But nice British breakfast? What's with the beans and kippers, pray tell?

Now I like good British pub food - I was in the UK in October eating and drinking at pubs along the way.

I stayed in the so-called most haunted inn in York, the Golden Fleece which served a proper British breakfast in the morning to those who survived the night.

The breakfast was fine except for the horrifying presence of beans! Beans next to fried eggs and bacon! I found the ghosts less ghastly in comparison.

As for the comment about poor American bacon, head south where we have good hickory smoked bacon that'll make your mouth water and your blood pressure sing!

Check out my pod, BTW, it has snippets of a beefeater and the battle of hastings.

    • If you cut it down to five minutes I would vote yes. Great, great story. Very good hosting, excellent sound and great interviewing. It just needs to be shorter. It seems like most of the content is kind of raw.

      But Eleni is hot.

    • the english language just sounds so much better when spoken with a british accent. hmmm. this is great! a tad long though, needs to be seriously shortened. and another thing that I question is the focus of this pod: is it REALLY about finding a good cup of tea in New York? That is what you are telling us in the very beginning. From the middle point onward, the direction starts to change to tea and british food...which is fine, if that is the focus. it just seems to stray from the beginning idea. I do really like this. keep at it! great job.

if you've got time, I'd love to hear your thoughts on my pods: Running with Penguins and A Scottish Ramble. Thanks!!

    • Very nicely done. Only thing is...it made me so hungry I had to go and make bacon and eggs with baked beans and tomatoes on the side. And then I wanted some Fish 'n' Chips. We have the same problem in France - they don't make good tea and its very hard to get decent bacon & eggs. Ditto Fish 'n' Chips. Although I've found crumpets in the supermarket.

The most important thing is that you went off the beaten path and told a story that would not have otherwise been told - local with international significance!
