Sand Cat

BigCat
Welcome to Big Cat Rescue's species spotlight! The Sand Cat is one of our smallest residents as well as a very elusive feline that not a lot of people have ever seen in the wild or in captivity. Not a lot is known about this feline whos population is going down as the human population in the desert areas rise. The Sand Cat is one of our favorites and hopefully will be one of yours as well. And this goes without saying but even though they are small they would not make a good pet. Hopefully this video will inspire you to support feline conservation efforts around the globe.
We post pods weekly on our You Tube channel.

    • Cool Kitty.

I would be honored to drive for this cat (Canyon?). Being a Sand Cat, I guess a classic dune buggy might be cool -- a Scion A would be cool too. No easy way to put him on a mountain bike though...

Good pod. I'd like to see another pod with much more info (and better audio of course).

    • the margarita music is a cute touch, but it was far too loud compared to scott's voice. Meow. I'd like to see these next time I go to Big Cat Rescue for a tour. Meow.
I gave these people my inheritance from my grandpa, they care about the big kitties.

    • I thought your coverage of the sand cats was really informative. The only thing that bothered me was that the music came in a little loud at the end. It would be nice to have it fade up, then fade down at the end. Overall it was super cool and inspiring! Thank you for doing a pod on this subject.

    • thanks..hopefully this lil' cat can hold onto #1 for just 1 days and a few more hours..
Yes, we would have LOVED to go overseas and film a wild sand cat..not sure if anyone has wild sand cat footage.

that was a bit loud and annoying, but overall I enjoyed it and learned something new!

    • I've been to BCR & seen Canyon, the Sand Cat in this video, he IS tiny! At first I thought Sand Cats were ugly - big, broad heads - but the more I see them I think they're adorable! : )

    • There is one quick scene in which the sand cat is behind the host. The cat due to its size is not one to come up to people.
Thank you all for your comments, I am glad we are still in the top 5. Not to make excuses, but picture a busy day with cleaning and feeding 140 cats and at times getting a moment to grab the camera, get scott (the host), and shoot a quick video on the fly before we have to do something else. So for it to compete with producers that went to film school and those who take time to do the pods..we are VERY glad we made it this far. thanks for watching!

    • Would like to see the size of the animal compared to a human. All the images were of the cat alone and it's hard to tell how small they are. Also a quick expert interview or map, or some other teaching image would add a lot. Really interesting though!

    • About the sand cat in the wild:
Since the sand cat is difficult to study in the wild and little is known about its. The World Conservation Union (IUCN), feels that sand cat populations are low due to habitat loss. As human population increases, more of its desert habitat is cultivated and over-grazed by livestock. Illegal hunting for the pet trade may also hurt sand cat populations.

    • The tone of the piece starts off comical, but you should really listen to the commentator; he says twice in the pod what the sand cats eat and this should not have been repeated. Instead you should get to the fact that these cats are becoming extinct and what could be done to prevent it. Most people living outside of the region that the cats are native to still have little idea of how we can help preserve these wonderful cats. I'll hold on voting for now, because the commentator was knowlegeable and passionate, but it's up to the pod producer to edit out redundancy.

    • Thanks for putting us into the top 5!!!
Please check out our "4 tiger rescue" pod.

This pod is short, and a lot of comments have been about the loud music over the scientific name part.
That was my Andy Kaufman type moment to wake people up.
At any rate..thanks so much for watching a little pod about a little cat.

your right. no even i know there were
such cats as Sand Cats and
I know most of the cats and big cats out there.
I hope your pod gets on tv it's well done
and informs people to how there are many animals we need to know about and help,
like the Sand Cat, many people don't know about that are disappering at an alarming rate.

    • I like this pod. Too often do we focus on the charismatic megafauna and lose sight of the real key to biodiversity which is niche. The biodiversity issue is a greater tragedy than even the human tragedies of war that we see today. I tried to post instructions on how to post a link, but the message read my html tags and wouldn't let the instructions appear correctly in the browser !
google "how do I post a link". it's actually very simple and there are a ton of web pages that will tell you how to do it. It's just a matter of typing a couple of extra blurbs of code into your message.
here's a link to my pod about senseless killings in Iraq.

I wish i knew how to create a link for it so that like you i can tell others to check it out. But i am good around animals, not so good around computers :)

as for filmmaking aspect, could make a bit more interesting with more creative editing techniques of the cat images while listening to the narrator. maybe some other footage instead of the same shots repeated.

    • How is this not yet an ongoing series on Current? I was super impressed with how this was all run. Its just a naturally good fit and seems like a great idea, in small bites, easy to digest and gain a lot from (leaves us wanting more - are there longer versions?) I think videos like this are great to utlize in the classroom as well. Good luck...Ill keep watching.
