Monitoring Coral Bleaching

2. To determine the extent of global coral bleaching, Professor Justin Marshall and a research team at the University of Queensland set up CoralWatch. Using a color chart, Marshall developed a way to easily and without the use of equipment, gauge a reef’s health based solely on its color. CoralWatch is an internet-based site that links up schools and other organizations such as dive clubs and monitoring groups around the world to track the health of coral reefs while raising awareness of the values of and threats to coral reefs. The goal is to discover trends while engaging high school students, dive groups and other non-scientists worldwide to collect useful scientific data.
