Alpine Avalanche

On March 31, 1982 one of the largest ski disasters in US history struck Alpine Meadows Ski Resort in Lake Tahoe, California. For the ski patrolman of Alpine Meadows, avalanche control and rescue operations come second nature, but this time was different, it became emotional and personal to search for their closest friends and ski patrol family. With all of their equipment buried under twenty feet of snow; they utilized anything and everything they could find to dig through the rubble of what was once their base lodge, to find possible survivors. The avalanche tragically took the lives of seven people including the mountain manager, Bernie Kingery, but one life was spared. For five days Anna Conrad was trapped under twenty feet of snow, protected only by the collapsed walls and furniture that had created a small space around her.

Excellant video! I worked for Bernie in the summer and fall of 1976 &1977, clearing rocks off the lower slops in preparation for snow making in the future. I was paid with a seasons pass and a ski locker in the winter. Bernie was a great guy I still remember him teaching us in PE class about winter survival after one our Classmates Danny Olson die after skiing off and getting lost. I was station in England in 1982 and my father called and gave me the news about Bernie.

i'm not sure but i've looked in the sacramento bee archives etc. and found no photos of course we're talking about 1982...that year i was a truckee resident and had graduated early from truckee highschool and had already spent a semester at college at sierra college in rocklin california. Anyhow, i wasn't working anywhere and didn't have to go to school and before it had come to fruition i was an avid extreme skiier and rock climber having lived in the donner and truckee area around lake tahoe for 6 years...also a ex member of the truckee ski team...a good friend of mine was a member of the u.s. olympic ski team "bill hudson" of course i haven't heard from him in over 20 years but we atttended jr. high school together ..as i recall he had a bad accident in the olympics...squaw valley was a favorite haunt of mine because i often skiied there for free one way or another...lol...i think the best trick was skiing single...coming up to a crowded ski lift and avoiding a sometimes hr. long wait you could get on in seconds with someone who had made it to the beginning of the line but was single...needing two people on the chair of possible a third to make a triple lift they never checked the tickets of a person they needed to fill the chair because of the confusion and a few faked slips to avoid them having time to look to see if i had a 50 dollar lift ticket... :) anyhow, on this day of the avalanche at alpine..there was major avalanches at squaw as well...i think it was 2 or 3 days before the weather cleared but i surveyed the damage at squaw valley mostly the avalanche that had cleared all the chair lift towers down off of red dog...i think i reached it traversing from kt chair lift...anyhow...it was another world...nothing i have ever seen like or since with the acception of being a resident in port clinton, ohio after a tornado...there was huge chuncks of mud, snow, broken trees, and the huge steel towers used for chair lifts that had been ripped off the mountain like matchsticks...the area was off limits at the time but i wanted to see it up close...i could be wrong about the time frame somewhat it having been so long ago..as i recall the squaw avalanche actually occured because of ten inches of rain or something that had come to the mountain after like 10 ft. of snow in a couple days...my nick her "taistix" is one my friends gave me in h.s. brian conston, troy guzman, the ariva brothers-johnny, kenny, and david, jerry and jerry...lol..jerry belon and jerry the northstar wizard named withheld for protection of the innocent and his dads reputation of possibly knowing me lol..anyhow...my name i've kept (nickname) is now the name i use as a professional musician and writer..try a google search theres a lot to see ..not that i'm proud of all the videos i've posted where i'm smashed but some good music nonetheless....-taistix

GL But I agree this could be tightened up a bit and shorter would help to focus the story. Is it about the avalanche? The woman who survived? The Ski patrol?
Check out Sister Beatrice Explores. She's been called our favorite Natural Disaster.

Yes, that is scary...especially being from Florida, hating the cold weather as I do. Cuts are a little rough, and a tiny bit distracting as oppose to fade-ins/outs. Some people hate fade outs, though, so don't listen to me. Great doc!

Good Job! GL! But I agree with the others on the edit. Maybe a little color correction or brightening on the interviews...it's hard to see.

Very nice job, although I agree it would be better to re-edit the music to avoid the vocal distraction.

A very interesting and well put together piece. I do think it could be tightened up a bit. Also, I love Ben Harper but I found the music a little distracting once the vocals came in.

very cool and well produced. the only thing is you might want to shorten it a bit so that current will air it on tv.
