Aton's Top Ten

medaglia
Aton Edwards professionally trains civilians how to prepare for disaster, both natural and man-made: earthquakes, terrorist attacks, you name it. He's created a list of items you'll need in the event of an emergency. Here are the top ten.

    • medaglia.is right A water filter is a great thing to have, especially after a flood where water gets contaminated. I alwas carry my leatherman multi tool and, like Edwards says wouldn't leave home without it. I'm sure that those Katrina people could have used everything in this video except the nuke thing which kind of depresses me because it is a reminder of just how sick and out of control this world has become.

    • in response to your comment, hernanbp, i'm guessing a water purifier would come in pretty handy during a flood. if you're really interested in the topic (i can't tell. your comment comes across pretty disingenuous), Aton has designed low-cost disaster resistant homes made from waste metal and plastic renewable energy, many which are in use in katrina.

    • That guy's a character... good advice but - as if I'm going to go on the tube with a mini pry bar, or any of that stuff (apart from a bike). You'd be arrested in the UK if you carried most of that.

    • I was stumped trying to figure out what the Top 10 things were. I only guessed 3! The video covers a lot of ground in 5 mins., and I like the style it was done in. OK, I'm buying the book.

    • I think this video is really cool. it's refreshing to hear a civilian talking about how we need to take responsibility for our own well-being, instead of a politician telling us "we're doing everything we can, etc...". It is shot in a very hip, urban style and very comprehensive. Well Done!

    • I joined the IPN 2 years ago and took one of his classes. My only comment here is that I like the style of the video but not the substance. During his class he broke down every specific point about every tool that he showed and demonstrated for us. It was also left out that he always stresses that the most important tool is your mind. I think this subject deserves more than the short M-TV style treatment. I am happy to see that he is finally getting the attention he deserves. We will all be better off fo it.

    • Whoa! got this from the IPN group serve. I like it lots!!! Aton needs to do a complete video like this for sale. This way people could get the whole treatment and watch it on their computer. I am a commercial vid producer and would love to do it. I will use the links Medaglia supplied to see if I can hunt him down. If he is ready so am I.

    • Some of you have asked, so I wanted to provide some links:
International Preparedness Network (the nonprofit Aton is director of)
Preparedness Now! minisite (Mostly about his book, but also contains Emergency Checklists and where to buy products)

    • Altough, it would be difficult to carry some of those things around for years, some of it is quite interesting and useful information. Should be aired.

    • My first post didn't get through. I wrote that I agreed that Anton correct when he said that the word certainty is dead. It really is. i am very nervous about terrorism -- especially after this bombing of Syria. Is there any way to reach out to Anton by email or his website? There isn't much info here about how to contact him.

    • Ok, tried to post something twice & it didn't get through. Hopefully it does this time. I just want to say that I liked the video and found it very informative. It is a bit short on some details but still useful. I think another should be done with more information

    • Bravo to Current TV for posting something like this. Mr. Aton is 1000% on point and we as Americans need to get our acts together and stop depending on this faulty government to save us during disasters. FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security are only interested in protecting themselves. We are on our own! Katrina proved that! Mr. Aton obviously knows this and has taken steps to show us how we can save ourselves when one of these looneys gets hold of an A bomb(or a couple) and uses it against us. Our "President" Mr. Bush has insured that we won't be running out of enemies any time soon. We can even have a massive earthquake that can hurt us just as bad. We need to be prepared and people like Mr. Aton are patriots that should be supported.

    • I agree re: politics of fear Severshed. Making this video has brought one question into sharp contrast for me: how prepared is too prepared?

    • He is right about that mini prybar. and mask I was stuck in a number 3 train about a year ago when it got stuck in a tunnel because of a fire. We tried to open the door but it was stuck. all we kept saying was how much we wished we had a crowbar to pry it open. I didn't know they made them that small. I'm going to get one & keep it in my purse.

    • Damn, these are hard times! I don't ride the subways anymore but if I did, I would carry that stuff too! I don't like waiting for help and prefer to do for myself, so he is really on point. I need to get with him to get my family's stuff together.

    • Good use of archival footage, it really ads an emotional quality to the piece. By highlighting this NGO you are also bringing us important information.

The only suggestion I would have is to talk about the politics of fear, to me, it seems excessive and overly fearful to bring a crow bar and a gas mask on the train, or carry around a radiation alert system, I mean, I can't walk around every day with an extra backpack full of apocalyptic preparation material, but maybe I just need some more convincing!
