Vivid Dreams

autonomy16
After years of yearning to go to Africa, Joan’s three-month stint as a Peace Corps volunteer turns sour on Christmas Eve when she is 'psychevac'd' back to the states and admitted to Georgetown Hospital mental ward. The drug required by the Peace Corps to be taken as a protection against malaria is said to cause only vivid dreams, but no one mentions the other side effects of psychotic tendencies, including suicide and murder.

    • I wish there was a way to avoid taking medicine all together! Natural herbs and remedies is the way to go. Who knows what we're actually doing to our bodies when we pop a tylenol every time we have a head-ache. In cases like this one where the drug is meant to protect you from malaria, I don't know what I would do. I want to join the Peace Corps and I know they do a lot of medical work to protect the volunteers ie: vaccines and preventative medicine-but that stuff freaks me out! Like I said, wish there was another way! This is a great video.

    • Terrific short documentary. Like a good short story, it developed Joan's character instantly, and delivered a powerful message through a very well-paced, visually engaging film. It makes you happy for Joan, sad for the others and asking the eternal 'why?'

    • Jim & Joan, Nice job. Glad I finally got to see it. Albeit on the small screen...but in the safety of my home...cause there are crazy people out there.

    • Here's another "secret" of our so-called government of the people, by the people and for the people. Why weren't people told that the malaria medicine had strong possibilities of making people psychotic. The side effects, as disclosed by the Peace Corps, included "vivid dreams," which in the case of Joan, turned out to be psychotic episodes. Whatever happened of our government looking out for the wellbeing of our citizens. Another American myth gone by the wayside! Brave act by Joan to tell this very private story, and bring light to the little known facts of the drug given like aspirin by the Peace Corps.
