Record Setting Northern Rockies Snow Melt May Again Increase Mid-Western Flood Concerns

The devastating flooding that is occuring along the Missouri and Mississippi rivers is going to get worse before it gets better. Up to this point, the majority of flooding has come directly from unusually high precipitation. But, while the mid-west was recieving massive rains during May and into mid June, Montana and other northern rockies states were still recieving heavy snowfall. In the mountains surrounding Bozeman, Mt there is currently between 2-8 feet of snow still waiting to melt. This is approximatly a 288% increase over the historical averages. This massive snow, that has accumulated so late in the season has led to flooding in southwest Montana. The Yellowstone, Madison, Gallatin and Jefferson rivers are all flowing nearly 300% higher than normal. These four rivers all come together as major tributaries to form the Missouri River. So, this flooding has only been happening since Monday the 16th and will continue untill this Sunday. The end result is that in approximatly one week past the begining of flood stage in Montana, the flood will continue down river, and again swell the banks of the Missouri. The difference is that people are not expecting the snowmelt...the increadibly wet winter is now being unleashed on the mid-west, at the worst time possible

In my pursuit of locating the origins of the Missouri river I headed up to the Hylite creek outside Bozeman, Mt. This creek is currently under a flood warning and will also reach the Missouri in approximatly one week.

The Helicopter rescue demonstrated is only a small aspect of the response to the high elevation flooding. The real concern in that these 300% incresed waters are roaring downhill towards the Missouri river
