Shell Oil On Irish Soil

Shell Oil in County Mayo, Ireland.

For over 9 years local people of Erris have had the ugly face of Shell Oil on their doorstep and have remained strong in their refusal to allow a raw gas pipeline to be laid through their lands.

This short film from 2008 show locals working with international environmental activists and the importance of this battle:
All the while since then the people continue to be harrassed, threatened, verbally & physically assaulted, arrested, taken to court, and imprisoned for attempt to keep their livelihoods of fishing and farming on ancestral lands.

Local Gardai have been used as private security, council have turned blind eyes to locals concerns and even the Irish Government openly allow this company to flaunt national and international laws.

2009 - Shell, trailing its appaling human rights and environmental record behind itself like an engorged tapeworm, has declared intent to move forward with its ill thought plans.
This time hiring ex-military and mercenaries for security...

Just a short ferry ride from the UK, its time to escape the intelligence crunch and get on over to Mayo to sample Irish Springtime - an action packed adventure for all the family!

    • We'll just ignore all the people who would much prefer it if the imported layabout "campaigners" could kindly fuck off home, and if the locals could cop on and stop costing us money and wasting Garda resources, shall we?

      yes
In this case thats exactly what I'll do - whilst you happilly ignore the state of Shell's social & environmental history.
Kind of evens the balance dont ya think.
Look at the context of this situation and its international ramifications as oppose to the kind offer of petty bribes Shell use to ingratiate themselves into local communities, then we may be ready to discuss further.
Unfortunately it is not my petty biases that contaminate your kid's drinking water, nor my lack of understanding as to what it means to live in a small community.
The picture is a whole lot bigger than our one sided opinions.

    • I wish to use this opportunity to express my sadness at the demise of an Eris local in County Mayo, Ireland, yesterday.
As far as we know an unmarked police car was part of a head on collision between garda and the nephew of a well known anti-Shell protester.

This young man was obviously many many more things to his community than a campaigner, but with 10 years of increasingly violent history between Shell and the majority of local villagers and the horrific recent assaults, there is little doubt of suspicious circumstances in this truely unfortunate event.

There where the smell of fresh sea air meets the sound of bird song.
Where the voice of the mountains mix with the rolling waves.
Where generations of the same families till the same land, fish the same waters as grandparents, great great grandparents.
We pay respect to the courage of steadfast belief and love of simplicty
That keeps these constant people afloat
As heaving oceans of sadness crash at their shores.

Villagers have borne a huge burden with openly aggressive Shell representatives for over a decade and there has been talk that as Irish mists decend, dissent from the people of the land could dissuade corporations like this from putting profit over people.

But only if they can hear our sweet voices over the roar of their money machines.
