As a naïve and idealistic American teenager, Thomas fled to the former Soviet Union to live a different way of life and to learn the Russian language. While transported to Belarus, a "Soviet Theme Park" of sorts, he worked as an editor for the only English Language newspaper at the time, the Minsk News.
