Current Seeks Viewers' Black History Content

January 31, 2006

Current TV is encouraging its viewers to create their own Black History Month content.

The network said it “has invited viewer-created-content (VC2) producers to supplement the work of its own staff in spotlighting those who are currently making history or contributing to the legacy of black Americans.”

Current's Black History Month programming will feature short-form pods from contributors including: human-rights activist Van Jones chronicling efforts to reform the California Youth Authority; corporate pioneer Darwin Davis looking at when the business world was filled with discrimination; a VC2 producer, half-black and half-white, examining his own conceptualization of race as he travels to view the remains of Rosa Parks in Detroit; Kevin Saer, a designer of Phat Farm clothing, explaining how and why he got into the fashion industry; VC2 producer Kikala Diallo and New Orleans-based rapper II Samual going to Houston and Atlanta to interview hip-hop artists displaced by Hurricane Katrina; and Fezo (a/k/a Keith Jones), born with cerebral palsy, a hip-hop artist determined to use his mic “to turn the hip-hop community and the perception of disability upside down.”

And the network’s February fare will feature celebrity guest hosts including Rev. Run (of Run-DMC), the cast of Rent, Blackalicious, Terry Crews, Fatlip, Tory Kittles, Murs, Shihan and Brian White.
