Former Vice President Al Gore's Current and DirecTV Inc. have signed a new multiyear affiliation agreement that continues the network's carriage on the distributor's "Total Choice" package, officials said Tuesday.

DirecTV has had a carriage deal with, and has been offering, Newsworld International. A company led by Gore, Current Media LLC, acquired NWI and next Monday, Aug. 1, it will relaunch the service as Current, an independent youth-geared network.

In a prepared statement, Current Media CEO Joel Hyatt said, "We are pleased to continue our affiliation with DirecTV, which will ensure a pervasive national presence for our young network."

Most of Current's 20 million subscribers are via DirecTV -- which has 14.4 million homes -- and its widely distributed Total Choice package. Current is also being offered by Comcast Corp. and Time Warner Cable.

"DirecTV strives to provide a diverse array of quality programming, and Current TV's plan to give young viewers the opportunity to collaborate on the programming they see on television is novel and exciting," DirecTV executive vice president of programming acquisition Dan Fawcett said in a prepared statement. "We hope to be a significant part in the network's success."
