Better sleep is associated with improved academic success

Results indicate that higher math scores were related to greater sleep quality, less awakenings and increased sleep efficiency. Higher English and history scores were associated with less difficulty awakening. Increased sleep-onset latency over the weekend was associated with worse academic performance.
According to principal investigator Jennifer C. Cousins, PhD, postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, it was surprising that although more and better sleep produced overall improvements, different types of sleep measures were related to different types of functioning.
"Sleep deficits cause problems for adolescents, but students differ in their personal resources and in how chaotic their sleep-wake schedules are," said Cousins. "The more regular and predictable their sleep is, the better they are likely to do when confronted with short-term sleep deficits. Therefore, participants with better sleep overall may be affected differently in a sleep condition compared to those who have a more varying sleep/wake schedule."

I know a few very smart people that seem to function just as well with only a little sleep. Can anyone else back this up?

My fiance just graduated summa cum laude with her undergraduate degree in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. She probably sleeps 4 hours a night.

They're not saying that you can't function and perform on suboptimal sleep. Just that a study with fixed parameters shows better functioning in specific areas with optimal sleep.
I know people who don't sleep like a "normal person" who are highly functional, but batshit crazy. I know that, for me, if I get less than 7 hours a night for any length of time at all, I start feeling depressed and would rather die than do basic life things. It takes all kinds.

Yea, he was just asking about exceptions. I wasn't trying to discredit the study. There are always outliers and exceptions. Yea, I have a good number of friends that are all insomniacs (and all pretty eccentric... a polite term for batshit crazy). A friend of mine cherishes his 'lucabrations'. He feels he does his most abstract thinking late in the night. A famous author has a great saying about lucabrations. I'd recommend looking it up.

Once again, the scientific method proves what everyone on earth already intuitively knows is true.

Descartes literally dreamed up analytic geometry (aka the Cartesian plane). Unfortunately for many mathematicians, obsession with a specific math problem can be the cause of many sleepless nights.

Descartes, his brilliance was so blinding that European science lost its way for a couple hundred years. People don't realize that the vacuum was a competing theory during his time. Everyone thought the possibility of nothingness was absurd. The eloquence and genius of Descartes won the day over what turned out to be a better theory.
