The modern Mediterranean Sea was formed by a gigantic flood from the Atlantic about 5.3 million years ago, according to research made public Wednesday.

The research by a team headed by Daniel Garcia-Castellanos from Spain's CSIC institute is published by the journal Nature this week.

The Mediterranean had become disconnected from the world's oceans and dried up during the so-called Messinian salinity crisis about 5.6 million years ago, scientists believe.

A huge flood then breached the Strait of Gibraltar and refilled the Mediterranean basin. The flood may have been sparked by tectonic subsidence, erosion and rising sea level, according to the research team.
