    • Religion is often used as a tool to kill. People didnt feel bad killing Native Americans because they saw them as savages or godless heathens. American settlers basically genocided the Native Americans. The majority of these settlers were Christian. Doesnt sound like they put a high value on love , friendship and patience when they killed and stole Native Americans' land.

    • When the Europeans came to America and told the Native Americans they needed to repent for the bad things they did so "God would forgive them". The Indians thought this notion was absurd. Why would you need to repent for bad things? Why not instead just be a good person? Morality has nothing to do with belief in God. History suggests that the more people believe in God, the more violence and bloodshed ensues as they try to convince those "non-believers" who were already content to let people live their lives.

    • Fearing the great surveilance camera in the sky is not morality. It's subjegation. Survey the overall tolerance of theists and atheists. That would be a far better measure of morality. Religion only encourages moral values that society already embraces. If they lived by all the morals in the Bible, Torah, or Qur'an, they would be horible, horible people.

    • Personally, I have found that the absence of a belief in God has only served to strengthen my conviction that love, patience and friendship are *all* that really matters.

Aren't there enough examples of powerful world leaders who claim an unyielding, and often fundamental, faith in God and yet effect hate and death in numbers unimaginable? What is the value they are putting on human lives?

And what about the religous zealots in our own country who murder doctors and nurses in the name of Christ? Where is the love in blowing up a planned parenthood?

    • I call shenanigans on this survey.

"He said people who are believers are encouraged - whether by a desire to please God, or because of a fear of God - to adopt these values."

These suggestions claim that Theists only hold these values so highly because they don't want to be on God's bad side. What kind of sense of morality is that? They don't hold the values because they actually think them to be good, moral qualities that every person should have; they only have them so they will avoid punishment. That's not good at all! It makes people attempt to deceive their deities.

By the by, I know that not all Theists have the same views on love and the other values as espoused in that quote from Prof. Bibby, but his interpretation of the data needed to be addressed.
