You're absolutely correct. Every time the elections come around, the GOP can't seem to run on the real issues affecting this country - of which there are too many to list here. They instead attempt to whip their party base into a frenzy by using FEAR and HATE mongering. Guns, God, and Gays ... de ja vu all over again. And this go around they've added xenophobia (illegal immigrants) ...

Well, I don't know if I can agree with everything you said, but I do agree that this debate is a distraction.
'Ann Coulter's legacy': Say something illogical and absurd and the liberals will eagerly jump to defend their position, without actually realizing this new debate is an absurd distraction.
A debate about equality under the law becomes a debate about whether a lesbian is similar to someone who'd like to screw a horse.
If they really believed that gays shouldn't marry because they don't produce offspring, they'd propose laws that nullified marriages that don't produce children within a year.
This certainly isn't a new tactic. A debate about privacy within a family became a national debate about whether Teri Schiavo twitched. A debate about poverty became a debate about whether a man (Edwards) with a $400 haircut would actually help a poor person. A debate about global warming became a debate about whether we can dismiss the whole idea of climate change based on Al Gore's personal life. They literally make up these insane ideas and liberals just gobble it up.
Obviously I'm not dismissing liberalism, just the concept of blindly allowing for illogical debates. I just don't think we should give the idea that a gay man is similar to a child molester the dignity of debate. We should really make fun of these people, outwardly; at any rate, we certainly shouldn't get upset.
