Topless photos of hockey player Katharina Scholz, sailor Petra Niemann, judo competitor Romy Tarangul and canoeist Nicole Reinhardt are published on four alternative front covers of the latest German edition of the adult magazine.

Reinhardt poses with only a canoe paddle to protect her modesty, while Niemann is shown tugging on a sailing rope over her head.

    • I don't blame them to be honest. The olympics and world championships are the only time some of these athletes get any measure of coverage (no pun intended). These athletes are in peak physical condition so I don't imagine they suffer from the same body issues as the rest of the planet.

It was in the news this weekend that swimmer Becky Addlington earns between £8k - £10k from her swimming. That is money handed out to her by the UK Sports Council, and from it she needs to pay for her transport, kit, travel, food. She trains all the time so cannot work as well. It is only the gold ribbon athletes who earn the big bucks so it is no surprise that those lower down the pecking order look for any other source of income.

Here is hoping that Becky gets a bonus after her 2 gold medals.

    • I think the only thing you have that actually belongs to you is yourself and i suppose you do what you want with it but i personally think that she's made the wrong choice.
Sexual appeal shouldnt be able to make you famous.

    • i agree man. what's the problem? we don't get al pissy when celebs pose for playboy. and the respresent our country just as much, even more so. i think that these athletes are great role models for so many reasons, this included! i think it's amazing for a woman to have enough confidence to pose nude. so i say kudos to them!

    • It is in the spirit of the Olympics since when the Greeks started it, they all competed in the nude. So there is ample precedent for the IOC to make that ruling

Most people already know that this is nothing new since Playboy has been getting women that competed in the Olympics to pose for a long time.

In the ancient Greek Olympics, the athletes competed nude so that the spectators and judges would know they weren't using anything to cheat. Along the entrance to the stadium they had statues of athletes, nude of course, but these weren't the victors. These were the cheaters so it became a walk of shame with scenes of what not to do, immortalized in stone. All that said, I think if you got it, flaunt it while you can, because in general athletes don't get very long to flaunt their talents. Good for these girls for enjoying their moment of glory.

    • Anyone who bitches about these girls posing nude for playboy needs to get off their puritanical soap box and come join the rest of us in the new millennium.

    • let's not forget that many olympians don't make squat. They have to take on another job to support their dreams. Stars like Michael Phelps get the fortune of living at an olympic training center (where USOC pays for housing etc) and commercial deals pay the rest (though he has certainly earned it). So yes, some olympians do need the money.

    • Judging by the photos, these women look pretty darn good. Why not share their beauty with the world? At the very least, here are some Playboy models with honest-to-goodness careers, women that others can very much look up to for their talent, hard work and discipline. The fact that they look great naked is just the icing on the cake, as far as I'm concerned.

    • They are cashing in on what they can. Not surprising. If the US had anyone to look at Hef would be offering them money and they would be accepting. As though the US has higher standards...

    • Maybe it's ok by German standards, but it seems tasteless to me. I'm sure they got a nice paycheck out of it. What people, even Olympians will do for money anymore.
