Carib Chief: 'Marry the same race or risk extinction'

In May this year, the chief of an ancient Caribbean people came up with a drastic solution to protect their heritage - and their future.

Chief Charles Williams of the Carib - or Kalinago - people of Dominica said they should not marry non-Kalinago people. "The impact of colonization has been so strong on us that if we do not take steps to protect the race, it will be soon extinct," he said.

Extinct is a word that the academics who study this people would never use, but Chief Williams has little doubt that the Kalinago could be in danger of disappearing altogether.

There are now about 3,000 tribal members left on the island, which has a total population of some 70,000 - and the chief's radical views have found support amongst other leaders.

    • The problem is, they're going to have to intermarry with other peoples eventually or their population will become too homogeneous. While I understand the desire to improve the integrity of a dying culture, it's a natural course for different peoples to combine via migration and assimilation.

    • Different species, their tribe are not, however the extinction would be of who they are as people. In totality that includes their appearance as well.

As for race vs culture, that is the language we have now when it comes to identifying other humans. New language? Sure that probably will come as we become global and diverse because of the that expansion.

I would like to pose a question.

What group would volunteer to eradicate their, for lack of a new language, race (if it weren't for survival ie we must self-destruct or else our gene pool will kill us)?

    • I don't really think culture and race are the same thing, I would even argue that there is no such thing as race on a biological level, and that it is a cultural concept, albeit a strong one. Racism exists, but race does not. Technically, they couldn't go "extinct" because they aren't a separate species, but their culture could surely be altered significantly. This use of race and the whole concept needs to be challenged and our language needs to reflect that... Same with the article on superstitions; people evolve, not superstitions. It's misinforming language that contributes to people's misunderstandings about science.

    • Makes sense to me
Whether it's PC or not is irrelevant

When your culture is on the verge of extinction, you'd be surprised what sacrifices you're willing to make.

    • Interesting story from the people's perspective. I understand his point and concern. Some duty is more important than desire.

    • It is borderline racist, but the Chief has a point. Not only would the 3,000 tribals eventually become extinct, their heritage, culture, customs and ID as
a specific group would be as well. This is a strange thing for me to write, as I am a big supporter of interracial relationships. I respect the Kalinagos' decision... My question to them would be, " Are there enough young men and women in their group to 'make more' Kalinagoes?"

    • I can understand his concern and his pride in his people. At the same time you can't force two people together based on race alone.
