24-year-old mother of 2 children, Loni marie Folks, was arrested in January for allegedly engaging in sex with a 16-year-old male student. She worked as a fifth-grade teacher at W.L. Smith Elementary School and after she was charged with sexual battery she was placed on administrative leave by the Petal School System. Folks came to the attention of authorities by way of a complaint from “a member of the community”.

Petal police arrested Loni M. Folks on the campus of W.L. Smith Elementary School. The 5th grade teacher was accused of having sexual relations with a foreign exchange student, who reportedly was living with the woman and her husband.

Folks was shown the overwhelming evidence against her and, as a consequence, in Novenber 2008 she decided to plead guilty to sexual battery in Forrest County Circuit Court.

    • Society has learned enough about the human body/brain to change its rules concerning children/sex/marriage. Any pedophile is seen as a risk to society because they pose a threat to our children.

    • Again, I still think she should be fired. My problem is with the criminal charges.

And what "risks" are talking of?

If it is pregnancy, im sure this 16 yr old knew of that.

    • It is proven psychologically that children of even the age here in this story cannot fully equate the risk factors. We as humans do not gain full ability of this untill 25 yrs.
Not only that but there are strict codes of conduct in with teacher/student relations even at the colledge level.

    • First, I am not bias so my opinion will not change if the gendes were switched.

Secondly there is a limit to were both parties want it and understand there actions. But at some point its obvious. If the kid was like 9 and knew nothing of what he was or is doing, then there is a problem.

    • If the kid wanted it then whats the big deal? Women in there twentys are attractive to men in any age group. This kid knew exactly what was going on and he wanted it.

How can you not think lines have been crossed here? She put herself in a parental role when she and her husband invited the foreign exchange student to stay in their home.

Whether he wanted it or not is beside the point. She is the adult in the situation and she had an obligation to behave as one.

This law was created to protect this kid. This law was created because it is thought that people that age cannot make sensable decisions. This is not the case.

When exactly did he get hurt? Getting some from a female you find attractive is not wrong its genetic.

And what harmful effects do you think this had on the boy? And if shame is your answer, thats soceitys fault, not his or the experience.

Also if your problem is with the women cheating on her family. She cleary didn't like that relationship anymore.

I have no problems with sex or people having it, but
the parameters in which this hookup happened are wrong.

Has he suffered harmful effects...probably not. He's probably talking the whole thing up with his friends, duh? This makes "the man", right?

Whether or not it was a sensible decision, though...I would question that. Is it sensible to do something that is illegal, that has consequences that reach far beyond your instant gratification, that, in fact, can hurt others. He does not possess the ability to take such things into consideration.

Sex does not make you a man, being born with a penis does. And for him to want to have sex only proves he is human.

Who was harmed, the womens family? You and I both know that for her to do something like this her family was already in the crapper before that kid came to her house.

I'm beating my head against my desk here.

A line has been crossed. There are things that just shouldn't be done. Period. This is one of them.

Sex between teachers and students seems to be rampant. Have we, as a society, gone so far into the ditch as to think that this is okay?

I understand the attraction factor. But there are some circumstances in which you can't and shouldn't act on that attraction. It's called adulthood.
