Almost 40 per cent women reportedly said they were at their most attractive at the age of 32, according to a recent survey.

Dr Sandra Wheatley, a psychologist, told the Daily Mail that the survey's findings were "really encouraging" and indicated that women placed value on life achievements as well as youthful looks.

She told the newspaper: "It sounds to me like women are becoming much more swayed by personality. It's a sign that we are valued for who we are and what we are capable of, not just what is on the surface.

Do you feel beautiful? Are you 32?

    • I don't think that's when they feel most beautiful, I just think that's when they're more accepting of their looks. At younger ages, they worry too much about how they physically appear, but as they age they start to appreciate their own natural beauty more.

    • With or without plastic surgery, makeup, botox, facelifts, etc? And what does it mean to feel "beautiful?" Accepted by men? When you are confident in who you are and don't live your life looking for acceptance based on your looks alone, then you are beautiful.

    • That is encouraging, but it is true that people should feel attractive at all ages and this study is as much an indication that younger women don't feel attractive as anything else.

    • Um if this is so, then why are Loreal, Mac, and wrinkle products stocks, sales and shares always at an all time high?.... LOL, I think men deal better with age. I have yet to hear a dude complain about wrinkles around his eyes LOL!. Women, are just naturally vain, thats that, and I don't want any of you ladies attacking me for saying this, because... you know its true...........

Mobius2012, I suspect that the commercials that are aimed at making women feel inadequate are partly responsible, and as you know, since you are a male, men respond visually. If a beautiful women walks in a room, the majority of men will turn their heads, sit up straighter, and take notice.

Women are too concerned about their looks, and for this I blame our culture. In the Mid-East, where women do mot wear make up in some cultures, and they cover up their bodies, their approval of their appearance is high, probably because the world is not telling them that they need to look better.

Oh absolutely... the media entertainment/industrial complex is to blame for the propagation of shallow beauty and vanity as opposed to substantial beauty, which entails having charisma, good character and intelligence. The media has warped womens idea of what true beauty is. I've made quite a studious effort to understand what true beauty is..and regardless of how old you are, honesty, Love, compassion and prudence will always keep you young and ''beautiful. I love women in particular, like yourself... that exhibit these characteristics. These women are actually more attractive than lets say, a women who is.... simply beautiful, and as we all know, beauty is relative, so age is of no consequence in that context.... and you are beautiful.....:)

I don't think women are naturally vain, I think we're just constantly told to feel that way. The best thing I ever did was to stop reading women's magazines; it's amazing how much better you feel about yourself when you're not constantly being told that you must be fat/ugly/wrinkled/whatever.

    • 54 and feeling fine. I have lived all these many years and wouldn't go backwards. I must admit, I feel much more beautiful when I am looking at the world from the inside, than looking at a mirror and seeing the outside. We are who we are.

The sooner we accept life as it is, the sooner we can accept who we are today. Beauty is like money, everyone always wants more. I'm happy where I am. When I look back later in life, 54 will seem young.

    • I felt the most beautiful at 42. I felt beautiful from the age of about 13, but at 42 I had more men hitting on me all the time and could not go anywhere without it happening. I think part of it was confidence that come with age. Now I am much older and do not feel beautiful but feel happy and satisfied with myself as myself. Still, I never did get fat and that makes me feel good. lol

    • I bet Dr Sandra Wheatley is 32.
I think other women should be encouraged to feel beautiful at any age. And if publishing studies like this helps, then so be it. But I really believe that this isn't new science, and that the idea that women feel ugly as they get older is a horrible myth created by advertising agencies so they could package up beautifying products and sell our sense of beauty and self back to us. Jerks.

this may be the first time I have ever disagreed with you on anything ... I just can't blame advertisers for forcing women to wear makeup. The entire culture surrounding style and fashion encourages/reinforces this ridiculous behavior; but really isn't the blame in the hands of the person that applies said products? That sounds like the old argument where you blame the gunmaker for killing someone -- instead of the person that pulled the trigger. Why can't women just stop reading the glam magazines that propagate these destructive images? Why can't/don't powerful women stand up against the industry? (I know the answer ... but still want to hear yours ...)

Sorry, I've got to jump in here! It's not like these advertisers are working in a vacuum here--it's not just the magazine. It's TV and billboards and the other women in your school/office/whatever, even your own family.

Women are constantly being told that they need to do to be pretty. I knew girls whose mothers had them on diets before they were 13, and other girls who put themselves on diets and had a full skincare regimen at age 8 because that's what their mothers did!

Not reading stupid women's magazines is a great step--I did and the difference is amazing--but it's not enough. There has to be a cultural shift, too.

You are absolutely right, it's not just glam magazines that have created this phenomenon. But I am still not convinced that you can hold the advertising industry accountable for the actions of said women. And whether Abby intended to or not, she is implying that men are forcing women do act out these behaviors. That really doesn't sit well with me, nor do I think it is accurate. Plenty of women are making it rich off other women in the fashion/style industry. But if you meant they are jerks, too, then we are probably talking about he same thing!
