about

If Vanguard did a food show, it’d be Cooking in the Danger Zone. Intrepid journalist Stefan Gates goes on a worldwide odyssey to check out the crazy (to us) foods that people eat in the far flung corners of the globe. In each episode he samples the culture and meets the locals before diving into the local delicacy. From radioactive milk in Chernobyl (it practically glows!) to the ethical controversy around BBQed dog in South Korea, this is a food show with brains (in some cases, literally).

host Stefan Gates

Stefan Gates

Stefan Gates is a food adventurer and award-winning writer/TV presenter renowned for an unconventional, counter-intuitive approach to food and an intrepid palate. He's eaten rat, radioactive borscht and rotten walrus, and had liposuction to extract glycerine from his own body fat. He's investigated conflict food in Afghanistan, radioactive food in Chernobyl and been smuggled into Burma to discover how food can be used as a weapon. His internationally-acclaimed BBC TV series have been broadcast across the world, and he is particularly interested in extraordinary food and the stories that underlie it. Oh, and one little-known fact about him is that he appeared naked on the cover of Led Zeppelin's Houses of the Holy album, aged 4.

Stefan wrote and presented Cooking in the Danger Zone (BBC2), travelling to the most difficult and dangerous places on earth to find out how people survive. He has appeared on Iron Chef USA and presented prime-time magazine show Full on Food (BBC2) His food/travel series Feasts (BBC4) took him to the greatest feasts on earth, and has also sold across the world. Stefan has just finished E Numbers: An Edible Adventure (BBC2), an extraordinary mythbusting food science series and he's made hundreds of episodes of studio show Food Uncut (UKTV Food). Gastronuts is a kids' food adventure show Stefan developed for the BBC and the second series has just finished a hugely successful run on BBC1.

Stefan has written five books, the latest of which is The Extraordinary Cookbook (Kyle Cathie) on unforgettable food adventures.
