Piñata Factory (Chi-Town street installs for good)

milc
Chicago artists released hundreds of paper mache piñatas stuffed with space blanket made at 3 temporary factories. The factory aims to draw attention to the issue of homelessness and the spaces (in this case highway underpasses) that used to act as shelter before they were fenced off/in.

The piñatas are the output but are far less important than the community and awareness brought about by the process of manufacturing. Over 100 Chicago area youth, more than 40 community members, and volunteers helped to create, install, and document this project. Here are some pictures gathered throughout the 2 years the factory was in "business" http://picasaweb.google.com/manilikecheese/PinataFactory

    • I enjoyed this and gave it the Greenlight, but the video was jumpy the whole way through for me. The sound seemed fine, but the video was not smooth. I'm hoping that it was a problem with the upload process and that Current can help you sort this out, or that maybe it's only a problem on my system.

This POD really makes you think about those that are less fortunate. I think it could be trimmed down a bit and shortened for Current TV attention spans.

Yikes, a space blanket against the freezing cold? Brrrrrr.............., but better than nothing, I guess. Ever thing about doing a pinata in the shape of a mattress?

You're not the first person to tell me about the glitches there is some sort of compression issue with my flv on the Current server.

Thanks for the tip about the attention span there should be a remix for sure. A mattress pinata wouldn't be much more comfortable than the cold (and I mean cold) cement though.

    • Mike, I enjoy the video, the fact that i was cameraman for some of the shots made it somewhat interesting with my Morgan Freeman voice, deep and intriguing. Next time lets ask Monster energy for some promotions, and I have some good ideas for next time. Lets call it, Coop Stand-up. and good job to everyone else for participating in the harsh cold in Chicago... GOOD JOB CO-OP!!!

Morgan Freeman might be a reach mr. Kelvin but I think you might have a bright future in the world of voice over for sure. Great work on this piece it couldn't have happened without you.

    • If there were more projects like this one, it would open up more doors to the to build up instead of tearing down. Using art as an avenue of beauty making the most out of the least with the great supervision of Mike others could do even greater. So everyone should get serious about this beautification in helping with this joyful work.

how about if you step out of the way of your own ignorance and search within yourself to recognize goodness when you see it. when you mock the people involved in this incredible project, you're only mocking yourself, and calling attention to the contrived, narrowly defined, and ultimately dismal place you must reside in order to waste time online mocking sincere folk representing a project that is so obviously brilliant. you are not the king of grammar, court's closed, the ruling party is heart and action.

    • rthis is a documentary of an exciting community art project with multiple layers of community involvement: kids, artists, and homeless. It documents and raises awareness of being homeless in winter, but shows the fun and the practical space blanket giveaway.

Co-op has been around for 6 years and sustains a number of it's projects indefinitely. The Pinata Factory was more of a 2 year one time performance that culminated in the installations.
Always have plans for the next project right now I am working on some guerrilla mosaic magic, a series of public speaker boxes (housed in reclaimed newspaper boxes), and the establishment of a youth created sculpture garden in Humboldt (to name a few).

We are always looking for volunteers if you have any interest

Thanks for taking the time to check it out!

The bbopdoons (my sista, and matt) song "Come to The Middle" was in the beginning of the piece and over the credits inspired the pace of the whole video. By the way my sis is also the co-founder of Co-op Image.

You can get the hot sauce at the Co-op Image site (the link is up top.)

    • Hey Mike. Awesome work. Your involvement and work is beyond any conceptual artist I have come across. You're one of the greatest artists in the world. It is high time mainstream society start realizing it!

    • this project is expansive and communal, radical and real, far-flung and far-reaching. the video--virtuoso. the music--exacting. there's really nothing like it. calls attention to our "feel estate" deficit in america. so many people, huge hearts, thoughtful minds, in real-time working together to make things happen. love it.

    • Not sure about the country music near the begining. Because of the length of this piece I would recomend cutting the intro to the point where you use text to explain the art project.

I was kind of playing with the mystery of the whole thing to lead up to the text.

It definitely be shortened in the beginning.

      Thanks for taking a look!

    • What a brilliant humanitarian, artistic and political effort. Who would have thought piñatas could bring attention to the homeless while giving kids a creative outlet.

    • This is a great project! Its puts an interesting light on how local government policies can affect their least heard and often ignored constituents while at the same time showing how a small group of local community activists and local youth can bring attention to the ramifications of those policies in a fun learning environment. Congrats!
