Israeli blockade claims 344 Gaza patients

Palestinian sources say 344 patients have so far died post 22-day war against Gaza, because of a lack of medical supplies in the Gaza strip due to an Israeli siege.

The last "martyr of the Israeli siege", according to Palestinian Ministry of Health, is 42 year-old Omar Ata Allah Al-Sha'er from Rafah city in the south of the Gaza Strip.

With the death of Al-Sha'er, the number of Palestinians to have died because of the Israeli siege imposed on the impoverished region since June 2007 now stands at 344.

The document provided by the Palestinian Ministry of Health shows that Al-Sha'er suffered from chronic kidney failure and his health deteriorated while Israeli authorities disallowed him from traveling to receive treatment abroad, although he had the necessary papers for travel.

The Palestinian Ministry appealed to exercise pressure on Israel; in order to lift its siege and end the suffering of hundreds of patients who desperately need treatment in hospitals abroad.

Meanwhile, a 34-page report by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, released Saturday, urged Tel Aviv to lift the blockade of Gaza and restrictions on the strip.

Pillay harshly criticized Israel for the violations "compounded by the blockade that the population of Gaza endured in the months prior to Operation Cast Lead and which continues."

    • There is conflict between groups.

What the "leader" of either group intends to do will never completely coincide with the beliefs of the victims, the people of such group.

There are some that do share goals with the person in power, but most find themselves in a thick, dense cloud of confusion.

Propaganda convinces people to block out their own opinions, to only believe what they are told.

I have read through the entire page, and have found that no one has a neutral point of view.

One person is convinced that Israel, a whole nation, is a terrorist group.

The other claims that Israel's enemy is the source of death.

Does this mean that any death caused by Israel is justified?

Can World Peace be achieved by being obviously biased against a people?

I for one am a huge supporter of Israelis taking Palestinians in for medical care. However, even in the US we have millions who go without care completely. How can we expect everyone in Gaza will recieve care?
My point is never that Israel is guiltless. That would be obviously ludicrous. My point is that it does it's best to arrest human rights offenders when their enemy does not. And that Hamas keeps people from getting care just as often if not more and did so during Cast Lead.

Returning to the story, it claims that 344 people died from lack of supplies.

That is different from the US situation. One is purely based on money, while the other comes down to religion.

My point is for all to understand that they should not be completely biased for or against someone, that they should see and think for themselves.

    • I love both of my countries, jealous much that I have dual citizenship? I wouldn't be surprised if all you came up with as a retort was misspelled expletives (god as if you know what expletive means ha). My husband is Native American, and since you don't look it by what you say shouldn't you get off his land? I personally think so. I'm sure his people don't like Jew haters either, just watch SF Kid:) Whatever as if I post for you, except when I'm telling you off, you're free to do what you want, unless you're a Palestinian woman in which case you have no rights except what Hamas dictates.

I guess then the feeling is mutual, M-U-T-U-A-L that means the same. At least we agree to dislike each other immensley. Actually, no, you hate on me, and I forgive your ignorance while allowing you to put your foot in your mouth, that's just the way it is. As if I care if you swear at me, oh no, my virgin ears.

    • I hardly think a UN body comprised of a majority of Islamic countries counts as most of the world. IF so, I want no part of a world that is clearly bent on Muslim domination. What I would call it is one racially charged group. Just like most of what you say seems to be clearly racially charged and most of your articles on condemning Israel are about small organizations which ask for condemnation but are laughed at by their governments who know better like South Africa.
Seriously, how much do you really think people buy this baloney? Everything you have said panders to Oil moguls in Saudi Arabia and doesn't do a thing for human rights in the ME. Even HRW that you quote all the time recognises Hamas' culpability. In case you haven't noticed, the whole world is sanctioning Hamas, not Israel. The blockade is on the terrorists where it belongs. And every European country with actual civil rights is supporting Israel. Even Russia doesn't put Israel down that much and we all know how they love their Jews.

    • Ass-umer I'm no guy. I am a woman who is for women's rights, of which there are none on the Hamas side of the border. And I will flag whoever does flaggable things because you guys just love to flag me. Otherwise I'd just talk shit back in this free country and in my homeland which is a free country for which I have dual citizenship so nanana boo boo since MAO loves lalala's and all that.
What's more is, say what you want, from the same tired sources, with the same tired pics.
Or better yet, direct people to HRW where most of your reports come from because at least they put out just as many honest reports about Hamas unlike your biased reporting does.
I don't care to silence you, just give you enough rope to hang yourself.
You say you want a fascist Islamist Palestine no matter the cost, it's your own funeral as a liberal. There is no sexual, religious or speech freedom in Hamasastan. And even the UN's chief investigator has admitted the investigation against Israel is biased. Look it up, as if you care to know the truth.
      Fatah has condemned Hamas,
      Egypt has condemned Hamas,
why are you so quick to go against the Arabs that actually want peace?

    • So your the guy who keeps on flagging us? You do understand that our voices will be heard. You will never silence us. We will continue to speak out against the killing and injuring of innocent women and children. We haven't gone anywhere, and we aren't going to go anywhere. We plan on staying right here and letting the world know about the evils that the israeli government commits. We may have to watch the words we use to get our message out because of censorship. But our message will get out. Personally I could care less what you say. I would never flag you or anyone. Censorship sucks in any form. Even if it seems to be in your favor because one day, it might not be.

    • Israel has instituted checkpoints for one reason – to prevent Palestinian terrorists from infiltrating Israel. If the Palestinian Authority was fulfilling its road map obligations to dismantle the terrorist networks and disarm the terrorists, and its security forces were taking adequate measures to prevent Palestinians from planning and launching attacks, the checkpoints would be unnecessary.

Israel tries to balance its security concerns with the welfare of the Palestinians, and is especially sensitive to the medical needs of Palestinians. Thus, many Palestinians are allowed to enter Israel to receive treatment from some of the finest medical facilities in the world.

Unfortunately, Palestinian terrorists have tried to take advantage of Israel’s goodwill. In December 2004, for example, a Hamas agent with forged documents claiming that he was a cancer patient in need of medical treatment from an Israeli hospital was arrested by security forces. Hamed A-Karim Hamed Abu Lihiya was to meet up with another terrorist, obtain weapons from allies inside Israel, and carry out an attack. That same month, a man recruited by the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade to plant a bomb on the railway tracks near Netanya tried to use false papers indicating he needed hospital treatment to enter Israel. Another Hamas terrorist planning a suicide bombing was arrested in March 2005 after pretending to be a kidney donor.13

“Israeli hospitals extend humanitarian treatment to Palestinians from the Gaza Strip and West Bank. These efforts continued when all other cooperation between Palestinians and Israelis came to a halt during the most recent intifada.”

      — Palestinian obstetrician and gynecologist Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish14

On June 20, 2005, Wafa Samir Ibrahim Bas was arrested attempting to smuggle an explosives belt through the Erez crossing. Bas aroused the suspicion of soldiers at the checkpoint when a biometric scanner revealed she was hiding explosives. When she realized they had discovered the explosive belt, she attempted unsuccessfully to detonate it.15

Bas had been admitted on humanitarian grounds to Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba several months earlier for treatment of massive burns she received as a result of a cooking accident. After her arrest, she admitted that the Fatah al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade had instructed her to use her personal medical authorization documents to enter into Israel to carry out a suicide attack. In an interview shown on Israeli television, Bas said her “dream was to be a martyr” and that her intent was to kill 40 or 50 people – as many young people as possible.

Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish, a Palestinian obstetrician and gynecologist from the Jabalya refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, who has worked at the Soroka Hospital, wrote that he was “outraged at the cynical and potentially deadly suicide bombing attempt.” Dr. Abuelaish said he does research at the hospital’s Genetic Institute and has warm relations with his colleagues. “I make a point, whenever I’m at the hospital, of visiting Palestinian patients,” he said. “I also schedule appointments for other Gaza residents, and even bring medication from Soroka to needy patients in the Strip....On the very day that she planned to detonate her bomb, two Palestinians in critical condition were waiting in Gaza to be taken for urgent treatment at Soroka.”

Dr. Abuelaish added, “Wafa was sent to kill the very people in Israel who are healing Palestinians from the Gaza Strip and West Bank. What if Israeli hospitals now decide to bar Palestinians seeking treatment? How would those who sent Bas feel if their own relatives, in need of medical care in Israel, are refused treatment?”16
