The former party at interest in Africa-Israel has reportedly succumbed to pressure from Scandinavian banks over West Bank construction.

UK investment bank BlackRock, part of the global investment bank BlackRock Inc. sold all its shares in Africa-Israel Investments Ltd. between June and August following pressure from three Scandinavian banks over construction in West Bank settlements. Africa-Israel, controlled by chairman Lev Leviev, is involved in construction activities in the West Bank including at Ma'aleh Adumim near Jerusalem.

BlackRock's divestment comes in the wake of the refusal of the UK Embassy in Tel Aviv's to rent offices owned by Africa-Israel because of its construction work in West Bank settlements. In the past BlackRock was Africa-Israel's second largest party at interest.

BlackRock denies that they divested after pressure from Norwegian investors, but does not wish to precise exactly what they think is wrong in the coverage.

A review of US Commerce Department data conducted by the Post found that the number of boycott-related and restrictive trade-practice requests received by American companies from Saudi Arabia has increased in each of the past two years, rising from 42 in 2006 to 65 in 2007 to 74 in 2008, signifying a jump of more than 76 percent.

The bulk of these requests were related to the companies’ or products’ relationship to Israel. Typically, Saudi officials ask foreign suppliers to affirm that any goods exported to the desert kingdom are not manufactured in Israel and do not contain any Israeli-made components.
