Democrats and Republicans alike are denouncing Rep. Joe Wilson for shouting "You lie" at President Barack Obama during his speech to Congress, an extraordinary breach of decorum for which the South Carolina Republican swiftly apologized.

"I was embarrassed for the chamber and a Congress I love," Vice President Joe Biden said Thursday on ABC's "Good Morning America." "It demeaned the institution."

House Minority Whip Eric Cantor, R-Va., told ABC on Thursday: "Obviously, the President of the United States is always welcome on Capitol Hill. He deserves respect and decorum.

"I know that Congressman Wilson has issued an apology and made his thoughts known to the White House, which was the appropriate thing to do," Cantor said.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., said that wasn't enough. "I think, frankly, he ought to apologize to the House as well," Hoyer said Thursday on MSNBC. He described the incident as something that "in 29 years I have never heard said in a presidential speech on the House floor."

Wilson's outburst came after Obama said extending health care to all Americans who seek it would not mean insuring illegal immigrants.

"You lie!" Wilson shouted from his seat on the Republican side of the chamber.

Wilson's behavior caused a political hangover for him and possibly for the Republican critics Obama had cast as shrill and more interested in killing any health care overhaul than finding a way to provide it.

Later, Wilson was contrite.

"This evening I let my emotions get the best of me," he said in a statement. "While I disagree with the president's statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the president for this lack of civility."

He then tried to call Obama to apologize personally, but ended up talking with White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel instead, Wilson's office said.

Biden said Thursday that he hadn't spoken with Obama, but, "knowing the president, I'm sure he accepted the apology."

By late Wednesday, though, the congressman's Web site had crashed, he had taken a beating on his Twitter page and Democrat Rob Miller had raised thousands of unexpected dollars online for a possible rematch with Wilson in next year's midterm elections, according to Lachlan McIntosh, Miller's campaign manager.

"Everybody was stunned," Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., said of Wilson's eruption. "It was just something that nobody had ever witnessed before. We all felt embarrassed."

Republicans froze; several glanced in Wilson's direction.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi directed a fierce frown at him; first lady Michelle Obama pursed her lips and shook her head from side to side. Biden looked down and shook his head too.

Obama, meanwhile, looked toward the outburst and replied, "That's not true" before going on with his speech.

Wilson appeared to consult his Blackberry for much of the rest of Obama's speech. He shook his head defiantly after several of the president's statements. When Obama finished, Wilson bolted from the chamber.

Wilson's behavior was "totally disrespectful," Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who had been Obama's rival in the 2008 presidential election, said on CNN. "There is no place for it in that setting, or any other, and he should apologize for it immediately."

    • You're right MoonLoon, they are all funded up to their necks by big companies, on all sides; right, left and moderate.
They talk out of both sides of their mouths and Pres. Obama is no different. He has lied through out his campaign and will continue on to get where and what he and his buddies want pushed through while they have the majority.
What a den of thieves they have all become.

    • The spectacle of corrupt politicians parading as our saviours is disgusting. I include ALL of them. Let us investigate the contributions to both D/R's from the "Health Industry"! As I have stated many times, they are all pigs feeding at the public trough! Obama is just a more marginally intelligent version of Bush!

    • I find this amusing... As I was watching the special coverage last night I could not help but notice all of the clowns mingling, greeting each other, smiling, and small talk. They all are such fakes. If I could have one wish granted at that moment it probably would be ability to read lips.
We vote for a bunch of clowns and they perform when camera is on. Yet many have other agenda with personal gains and power.

    • Well, well, well...

Whether because of his outspokenness or in spite of it, Wilson is a major recipient of contributions from the health care industry.

In fact, over his entire congressional career, health professionals represent Wilson’s top industry contributors, donating a total of $244,196 to his campaign, according to the Center for Responsive Politics OpenSecrets.org database. He received another $86,150 from pharmaceutical companies, $73,050 from insurance companies and $68,000 from hospitals and nursing homes.

Among Wilson’s top contributors are the American Hospital Association, a lobby group that represents the interests of hospitals and health networks, and the American Medical Association, which represents physicians.

Joe Biden can actually be embarrassed! Wow!
Can I be embarrassed? Sure, but not by the whining liberal progressives that don't remember the crap they threw at any of the conservative or moderate presidents, and no one talked about apologizing.
I'm actually embarrassed I waste my time listening to some of the BS that is spewed on this site by the people that think throwing money at a situation to 'help' others actually will work with out even knowing how it is going to be done.
Who pays these ACORN employees? Where does the money for their checks come from?
And can you see who's benefiting from the services?
      Not the truly needy.

    • Shouting out loud to call the President a liar to his face is disrespectful, even if he disagrees with the statements. I felt awkward and embarrassed from my couch in my living room at home.

Pelosi definitely shot a death glare in Wilson's direction. Remind me not to cross her in a dark alley...

    • I was even embarrassed when he said it. Obama looked a little angry, but took it in stride. Maybe Wilson suffers from Tourette's Syndrome???
