U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., on Wednesday called a deal between President Barack Obama and the pharmaceutical industry “unsavory.” He introduced amendments to lift restrictions on prescription drug imports from Canada and Europe.

“For far too long, powerful lobbyists from the pharmaceutical industry have stood in the way of Americans’ access to affordable imported drugs,” McCain said. “Their enormous political campaign contributions made in return for political support of their agenda and their secret unsavory deal with the White House in exchange for their support of the health care reform have further contributed to the American people being prevented from accessing cheaper prescription drugs. Instead, Americans continue to pay 60 percent or higher for the same prescription drugs that are sold in Canada.”

    • President Obama, in exchange for endorsement from the Big Pharmaceutical Companies for his legislation, is going to make it illegal for Americans to take advantage of the 60% savings on prescription drugs from Canada or other places. Senator John McCain may have got money from a wide variety of places. Senator McCain does not sell out Americans in exchange for that support, like President Obama does.

    • Weren't people driving to Canada a few years ago to get presription drugs because it was so much cheaper and the Bush administration continually blocked imports?
How exactly does allowing the import of cheaper drugs from Canada and Europe not benefit the people of the US? The article itself says that Americans pay 60% more for drugs that our Canadian counterparts. Maybe now, older people won't have to make life decisions at the pharmacy, eat or pay for granpa's heart meds.
I just can't see how this has been spun into a negative for the Obama administration.
In case you didn't know Mcain received campaign contributions from 22 different organizations with ties to the healtcare and pharmacuetical industries

    • In order to get his "crap obama-care" legislation through, President Obama is now stooping so low as to sell out the American People. In exchange for support from the Pharmaceutical Companies, President Obama is willing to force Americans to pay higher prices for Prescriptions and make it illegal for Americans to buy affordable prescriptions from places abroad like Canada. This is this not going to increase competition. This is not going to save Americans money. THis is not going to help Americans get affordable Health Care. President Obama - "YOU LIE!" How Dare you?!?!
