A Sheffield Hallam University student who got blind drunk and took a leak on a war memorial has been spared a prison sentence by a judge who said he had never seen anyone before him who was more contrite.

19-year-old Philip Laing had drunk a bottle of whiskey with a friend before knocking back so many drinks on a student night out that he couldn't remember a thing about the night.

As well as an epic hangover, Laing's been punished with 250 hours of community service.

    • He needs the sh!t beat out of him. then he should have to Volunteer in a V.A. hospital for 100 hours. Then he should have to apologise in a public forum. Then he should get the sh!t beat out of him again. I still think he got off light.

    • I feel for this guy. He was an idiot but from reading the statements he's made since the incident, it really does seem like he's sorry for what happened. It sounds like he just got blind drunk and had no idea what he was doing.

250 hours does seem a bit full on.
