Brian Ulrich’s photographs of closed-down malls and big-box retail stores reveal the potential ghost towns lying inside successful shopping complexes all across America. His photo-documentary is a testament to the devastating impact of the current financial recession, as well as to the failed illusions of a lifestyle based upon unbridled American consumerism.
This piece includes a number of very memorable high-resolution photographs, as well as a remarkable, haunting slide show.

Pretty fantastic photography!
Though I personally have a love affair with great american cities, I have long known that the hardest work ahead of us all is to deal with the failure of suburbia. It's one thing to deal with say the collapse of Detroit's historic neighborhoods. But how many people think that the ticky-tacky plastic track homes and big-box lifestyle centers can withstand 10, 20, maybe 50 years of abandonment and disinvestment?

God forbid that India should ever take to industrialism after the manner of the west... keeping the world in chains. If [our nation] took to similar economic exploitation, it would strip the world bare like locusts. ~Mahatma Gandhi
