We're living in broken Britain, say most voters

Voters are deeply pessimistic about the state of Britain today, believing that society is broken and heading in the wrong direction, a Populus poll for The Times has found.

Nearly three fifths of voters say that they hardly recognise the country they are living in, while 42 per cent say they would emigrate if they could.

But worries over the pace of social change and dislocation are balanced by the belief that life will get better, according to the survey undertaken at the weekend.

It suggests that 70 per cent believe that society is now broken, echoing a Conservative campaign theme of the past two years, while 68 per cent say people who play by the rules get a raw deal and 82 per cent think it is time for a change.

    • Broken britain is just a state of mind. narcissism. I dont walk around around thinking oh no britain is so broken. You could have been born in Iraq or Ethiopia then you really would have something to complain about. Sure its not great but i cant remember when it ever was great. blaiming kids isnt the answer and never has been they havent got a say with how the country is run they just want to have fun without being scowled at and called chavs. I think the worst people are overly middle class know it alls who blame everyone else.

      ever heard of voting?
of course they have a way to decide how the country is run. they just dont bother.

i went to a bad school and had the same treatment as everyone else, whats the difference between me and the majority of my classmates who are now in a low wage dead end job?
well i aimed high and worked hard. i got taught as a kid that if i wanted to have the nicer things in life i had to work for it so i have been.

britain is broken in the sense that alot of people dont push themselves to do better, and settle for basics in life, which i think leads to the general IQ level dropping etc.

much like the film idiocracy, as bad as the film was it showed a interesting idea, what happens when the smart dont reproduce and the high school drop outs get 6 kids and live off benefits.....

granted you cant blame kids since its there parents who brought them up.

    • I'd like to know what country the 42% think is better.

Britons do love a good moan. I keep telling people who slate the UK - you're not patriotic, you're nostalgic.

I wouldn't be anywhere else (unless you're offering me a cushy job in New York...)

    • the answer is clear in my eyes: to improve britain, we should encourage that 42% to emigrate and equally encourage more immigrants. too many brits here

    • what do you expect?
we live in a generation where the kids get everything easy and go out drinking every night because they think lifes going to be kind to them.

kids drink and do drugs from around 14 in my experience, i blame parents with lack of disicpline, kids should be doing sports and working hard in school instead of getting "wankered" and knocking up otherkids trying to be adult like :/

how do you expect britain to improve when the iq of its citizens is dropping and dropping with each generation?

do you think this is a specifically british problem? seems much of the developed world is dealing with the same thing. maybe we should begin a process of regression to improve our discipline and what not.

ive only ever lived in britain so i dont know what its like in other countries.
i just know that as ive grown older ive seen the average person of my age give up things that id consider healthy like sports and hobbies so they can go drinking and have sex etc

but where does it all start?
well id blame the government for not letting parents hit their children or even to grab them in a supermarket because they keep running off.... its child abuse to disipline your children now :/
i think parents are to easy on their children, id say 9/10 of the people i went to school with didnt aim higher then college because they didnt have the encouragement to tell them they could do whatever they wanted if they tried.

i was in the pub earlier today discussing this with a group of men and we all admited we had been hit at least once as a child and that it stopped us doing what we had done wrong again.

granted ive got a bias view, but been honest our "chav" culture is increasing rapidly and with it will come more unemployment, skill gaps and crime over the generations
