Jon Huntsman Suspending Presidential Campaign

Jon Huntsman is dropping out of the race for the Republican presidential nomination, according to campaign officials.

An aide to Huntsman confirmed the news to The Huffington Post and said the former governor of Utah would endorse Mitt Romney on Monday. The aide added that Huntsman "didn't want to stand in the way of the candidate most prepared to beat Obama and turn around the economy."

Huntsman placed third in New Hampshire's primary election last week after investing significant time and resources in the Granite State.

    • Thank you for the link Jeff. Not really following rep nomination. Since Sara Palin days these guys are kind of dull. She won't be easy to beat in newswothiness.

    • The most flabberghasting thing about this is Huntsman's immediate endorsement of Romney, whom only 6 days ago called him unelectable, and "running for the Waffle House."

I like that waffle house line, haha.

    • Could somebody who is politically astute tell me why Perry is still in the race? Now that the southern conservative caucus in Texas (his home state) has endorsed Santorum, just what is his strategy? If he's the next to go. are his supporters likely to turn to Santorum, Gingrich or Romney? A political comeback seems as likely to me as Norma Desmond starring in another silent film blockbuster.

Historically, the South Carolina primary is the biggest hurdle of the season. Many second tier candidates stay in the race to see how they stack up with the crop of evangelicals that make up a huge chunk of the electorate. A sad showing there will make any potential donors flock to more "prominent" candidates.

So, the short answer is: he'll be around til the money runs out.

As far as where his supporters flock to, that's the million dollar question. Do they decide to go with whom they feel is the most likely to defeat Obama in the general, say, Romney? Or do they hold their conservative values in the highest esteem?

If you want my opinion, it seems that the two most conservative (right-wing, if you will) candidates in the race are still Perry and Santorum. So, it would seem that by proxy those voters (and donors) would find Santorum the most desirable. If only because they'll see Romney as a Massachusetts liberal (and Mormon) and Newt as a climate change (and wife change) candidate.

    • Romney was already annointed by Bush's daddy. Pretty sure he will be the nominee in order to give it to Obama for a 2nd term. Looks even more like this is all a farce being played out just to go through the motions to make people think they actually have a say in all these primaries. As if. They should just go straight to the convention and get it over with already. But of course, they can't make the deception look too obvious. Just another huge waste of money.

    • Just yesterday he pushed the editorial board of the largest newspaper in South Carolina to endorse him.
They did. Today, he withdraws. His billionaire daddy must have pulled his allowance for silly things like Presidential campaigns.

    • I guess he wasn't racist enough, or a big enough liar to feed the never-ending thirst for hate by the TB/GOP supporters. He was the only sane one in the race.
