Despite the connections that helped them get initial access to campaign staff, the two directors came cross their main subjects, George Stephanopoulos and James Carville, accidentally. That theme continued throughout the shoot as Pennebaker and Hegedus spent each day inventing gimmicks to capture footage beyond designated areas to eventually achieve their final product.
