Valentines Day was also started by the church to stop young lovers from doing the dirty on Lupercalia, the celebration of Lupercus, god of fertility. The church found this oddly inappropriate. And set up the rules of courtly love for this day, writing cards and letters to the hottie of your choice expressing your very non-sexual fondness for them. Oh the irony.
