Sarah Haskins in Target Women: Chick Flicks

Sarah_Haskins
Once upon a time there was a movie about a woman looking for love. And then there was another one. And another one. And another one. Many of them starring Colin Firth.

Which one of these have YOU identified with lately: Happy Go Lucky, Sleepless in Seattle, The Women, Never Been Kissed, Sweet Home Alabama, The Accidental Husband, Working Girl, In Her Shoes, The Break-Up, The Holiday...or other movies with "the" in the title.

Target Women is a recurring segment on Current TV's weekly television show, infoMania. In each episode of Target Women, Sarah Haskins takes a look at the often-ridiculous way the media reaches out to women.

infoMania is a half-hour satirical news show that airs on Current TV. The show puts a comedic spin on the 24-hour chaos and information overload brought about by the constant bombardment of the media. Hosted by Conor Knighton and co-starring Brett Erlich, Sarah Haskins, Ben Hoffman, and Sergio Cilli, the show airs on Thursdays at 10 pm Eastern and Pacific Times and can be found online at http://current.com/infomania. • I didn't realize Happy-Go-Lucky is a chick flick, I guess I watched a different trailer. Anyways, it is a good film. Sally Hawkins' character is just dorky and hilarious.

    • i HATE chick flicks. and im a girl or i guess a chick (although i don't have feathers, my father is not a rooster and my mother is not a hen). its always the SAME thing every movie. chick shows, chick movies, all so stupid. i am a girl who thinks constantly: wow it would SUCK to be an actress...you don't get all the cool awesome roles the boys do, the male actors always get such awesome and versatile roles and there aren't nearly enough female roles of equal caliber. i think to myself...well...i'd just make myself look like a man and audition for that role and get it if i was a good actor, i want to be the lead and do all that awesome stuff, i would be the boy even though i am a girl, its acting after all and in theatre it was common for men to play female roles for many years and still is and today it is very common in the theatre role for girls to play male roles...so why not the same for movies and tv? thank you so much for this i really appreciate it and so will all my female friends who feel the same as i do about these crappy "yes seen it all before" chick flicks- i know maybe 2 girls who actually like movies and tv that are apparently supposed to be for girls, at least the mainstream ones- ok excluding cartoons, because god every woman i know except me it seems loves disney from their childhoods. haha my boyfriend likes chick flicks sometimes. i like martial arts movies :) haha this was great, good job sarah, as always. and yeah...what is fun about crying? never understood why you would want to watch some sad movie. ok girls do you agree?

    • Damn it I love chick flicks! Mainly because the men in those movies who sweep their women off their feet, have jobs, cars, no dui's, they have bank accounts and they did all the previous on their own, they also don't blow their nose in the shower, throw a fit in public, or drain the life out of you with all the problems that a woman would be able to take care of in a half an hour. Why the hell can't I fantasize about that?

    • If only we COULD all marry Colin Firth!
I'd go straight for that man. Mmm.

These are great, by the way-- they always put a huge smile on my face! Thanks :)

    • Great one, Sarah - so smart and funny. I found you thru Jezebel and I'm going to spread the Target Women gospel on my Saucy Media blog where I write about women, comedy and content. Nice to find a kindred spirit!

    • Oh my God. "Happy-Go-Lucky" was marketed completely differently here in the UK. It never even occured to me that one might sell it as a "chick flick".

    • Sarah, all of your "Target Women" segments are unbelievably awesome. I first saw them linked from feministing.com (where you have many avid fans) and I've converted several friends. My humble suggestion for a future segment: commercials for cleaning products that imply a romantic relationship between a woman and her mop, like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=accrp2BFMTE
Those have been driving me batshit insane lately. Keep up the good work, on whatever topic!

He's not just going to *contact* her! She has to run into him while trying to catch the light at the crosswalk or interview him for some sort of television spot or discover he's her best friend's ex at a hilariously uncomfortable dinner party! That's how these things happen in *real life*.

    • It's frustrating that it's still impossible for a woman in Hollywood to be happy if she doesn't have her knight in shining armor. Clearly, a man to dote on is what makes life worth living! I mean hey, they can surely add meaning and happiness... But are those things unachievable without one?

Some women like car chases and explosions, too. Also, sensible, comfortable clothing! How does anyone run in heels?

      Funny stuff, kudos.

    • "The Women" is a remake of a movie of the same title from 1939. The original is actually worth watching. It shows the cattiness of society women in that time, is very witty, and the performances are excellent. I hope the remake holds up to the original (doubt it...)

i didnt see the original women, but i saw the remake of that one, "the opposite sex" (from the 50's), wich was pretty good.
so there you have it, this is a story that have been used for so long i lost my hope of an original chick flick.
