Sarah Haskins in Target Women: Chick Flicks

Sarah_Haskins
Once upon a time there was a movie about a woman looking for love. And then there was another one. And another one. And another one. Many of them starring Colin Firth.

Which one of these have YOU identified with lately: Happy Go Lucky, Sleepless in Seattle, The Women, Never Been Kissed, Sweet Home Alabama, The Accidental Husband, Working Girl, In Her Shoes, The Break-Up, The Holiday...or other movies with "the" in the title.

Target Women is a recurring segment on Current TV's weekly television show, infoMania. In each episode of Target Women, Sarah Haskins takes a look at the often-ridiculous way the media reaches out to women.

infoMania is a half-hour satirical news show that airs on Current TV. The show puts a comedic spin on the 24-hour chaos and information overload brought about by the constant bombardment of the media. Hosted by Conor Knighton and co-starring Brett Erlich, Sarah Haskins, Ben Hoffman, and Sergio Cilli, the show airs on Thursdays at 10 pm Eastern and Pacific Times and can be found online at http://current.com/infomania. • Damn it I love chick flicks! Mainly because the men in those movies who sweep their women off their feet, have jobs, cars, no dui's, they have bank accounts and they did all the previous on their own, they also don't blow their nose in the shower, throw a fit in public, or drain the life out of you with all the problems that a woman would be able to take care of in a half an hour. Why the hell can't I fantasize about that?

    • If only we COULD all marry Colin Firth!
I'd go straight for that man. Mmm.

These are great, by the way-- they always put a huge smile on my face! Thanks :)

    • Great one, Sarah - so smart and funny. I found you thru Jezebel and I'm going to spread the Target Women gospel on my Saucy Media blog where I write about women, comedy and content. Nice to find a kindred spirit!

    • Oh my God. "Happy-Go-Lucky" was marketed completely differently here in the UK. It never even occured to me that one might sell it as a "chick flick".

    • Sarah, all of your "Target Women" segments are unbelievably awesome. I first saw them linked from feministing.com (where you have many avid fans) and I've converted several friends. My humble suggestion for a future segment: commercials for cleaning products that imply a romantic relationship between a woman and her mop, like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=accrp2BFMTE
Those have been driving me batshit insane lately. Keep up the good work, on whatever topic!

He's not just going to *contact* her! She has to run into him while trying to catch the light at the crosswalk or interview him for some sort of television spot or discover he's her best friend's ex at a hilariously uncomfortable dinner party! That's how these things happen in *real life*.

    • It's frustrating that it's still impossible for a woman in Hollywood to be happy if she doesn't have her knight in shining armor. Clearly, a man to dote on is what makes life worth living! I mean hey, they can surely add meaning and happiness... But are those things unachievable without one?

Some women like car chases and explosions, too. Also, sensible, comfortable clothing! How does anyone run in heels?

      Funny stuff, kudos.

    • "The Women" is a remake of a movie of the same title from 1939. The original is actually worth watching. It shows the cattiness of society women in that time, is very witty, and the performances are excellent. I hope the remake holds up to the original (doubt it...)

i didnt see the original women, but i saw the remake of that one, "the opposite sex" (from the 50's), wich was pretty good.
so there you have it, this is a story that have been used for so long i lost my hope of an original chick flick.
