Sarah Haskins in Target Women: Vampires

Sarah_Haskins
It's love at first bite. Sarah Haskins goes on a field trip to find out why vampires -- like the one Robert Pattison plays in Twilight -- are driving women batty. These are the only two vampire puns in the piece - I promise.

The show puts a comedic spin on the 24-hour chaos and information overload brought about by the constant bombardment of the media. • Sarah -
this is hilarious! I love your work and appreciate your interviewing technique. The vampire genre is on its way back up: read Ruffian Tedd "The Winter's Child" by Sean Lorigan. It's a no foo-foo read that will leave you wanting more of the hottie Callum McGinnis!!

    • Not only did you make fun of everyone's lust for Edward Cullen, you also threw in the Chuck Bass reference. You are my absolute hero, Sarah Haskins.

    • Why are American teenage girls so stupid? Oh yeah, because they are all spoiled brats! I thought the low was the Titanic, but no, we can go lower....

    • Oh gosh, Twilight. The books are a horrible guilty pleasure of mine. Team Jacob, ladies.

And there's no way the fourth book will be made into a movie. Just sayin'.

    • Funny, but Sarah should have mentioned how controlling and harmful the relationship between Edward and Bella is. It's really not a good example of a positive relationship for young people.

Yeah, the ~bad boy~ thing isn't my biggest gripe with the book series either--that might be the godawful writing, the banality, or the irritating lead characters with zero substance (why does Bella love Edward? he's pretty, oh so pretty, aaand that's about it)... and as far as Target Women-worthy content goes, there's the way the protagonist is bailing on college for ~*~wuv~*~; the way Edward's stalking behavior is portrayed as oh so romantic; the creepy emphasis on perfection, etc etc etc. If she hit on every one of its flaws, the clip would go on forever.

That said, I watch T:W expecting 3-4 minutes of funny, not a thorough and brutal critique or anything--I'm not criticizing. This take on the book resulted in the interviews with that hilarious and sassy mom who loves "FORBIDDEN!" romance and the straight edge kiddo, so it was more than worth it.

Hey there - That's a great comment. I actually think that the controlling aspect is part of Edward's appeal. He'll NEVER leave, which, when you're a young lady looking to embark on your first serious romance seems great. And not limiting.

Also, I haven't read all the books, but in the first one, Edward seems to still want her to go to college.

Probably so he can go to frat parties.

you don't have to read the other books. you just have to read cleolinda: http://cleoland.pbwiki.com/Twilight#Bookdiscussionentries

bella and edward get married straight out of high school and immediately make a spine-snapping vampire baby who edward has to deliver himself through c-section. with his teeth.

from book one i would have dearly loved some more focus on how hotness justifies anything in meyer's world. most of these kids wouldn't be nearly so swoony for edward if he wasn't gorgeous -- but if you're pretty, it's not called stalking; it's love! the sparkliness and mind-reading are also good for laughs. another example of women being unable to resist shiny things?

Ugh I read the first and second books, definitely not going to read the rest. Edward cannot compare to Lestat and Louis. If you want to read about REAL vampires, read Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles.

    • Well, every woman in America may be in love with one man; but according to Wikipedia, he's 108 years old. Yikes. Loved the comparision to drug dealers, btw.

The 'bad guy'-attachement might be the feminine version of the Madonna/Whore-complex - it stems from a rebellion against a bourgeoise moral which sees sexuality as dirty and sinful; bad guys therefore promise freedom and excitement. Yet as the rebellion is only one in and for appearance, women simply need to reveal the inner, romantic prince charming of every bad guy --- so that they may become a happy Disney princess!
