Target Women is a recurring segment on Current TV's weekly television show, infoMania. In each episode of Target Women, Sarah Haskins takes a look at the often-ridiculous way the media reaches out to women.
infoMania is a half-hour satirical news show that airs on Current TV. The show puts a comedic spin on the 24-hour chaos and information overload brought about by the constant bombardment of the media. Hosted by Conor Knighton and co-starring Brett Erlich, Sarah Haskins, Ben Hoffman, and Sergio Cilli, the show airs on Thursdays at 10 pm Eastern and Pacific Times and can be found online at current.com/infomania. Thank you, Sarah Haskins. You are always amazing. Target Women is fantastic. This is hilarious and disturbing at the same time of course and you do a great balancing act, impressive. Barbie has long been a plague. She's addictive. Of course kids love her because all the other dolls are boring in comparison but man the damage she and ken do psychologically and otherwise to them! Not to mention the fact the dolls and their accessories are made in sweatshops, often by kids. Great segment. I laughed a lot. I love that you expose wrong/bad things with great comedy, it makes it more effective and of course we all need to laugh in life. I just hope I don't get one of those creepy permanent smiles that non-regular-lady barbies of today and non-regular-kens of today have as a result haha just joking. :D and LOL about people who want a barbie who isn't mainstream or who think she is too mainstream haha that was great o man everything was great every comment you make on every Target Women segment/special, just everything, brilliant brilliant brilliant.

My lifelong notion that Barbie was, strictly, a ridiculous male fantasy and an extremely unrealistic anatomical ideal for young girls the world over has either been strongly reinforced or utterly destroyed.
I can't make up my mind. Um...thanks?
Now, if you'll excuse me, "Little Miss Sunshine" is on.
Gotta go. - 4 years ago

huntre:
Strongly reinforced. Definitely strongly reinforced. On another note- as you know "Little Miss Sunshine" is an awesome movie. It's one of my favorites of all-time. Take care. O hey remember little Olive in the film? And the scene about ice cream? :( Not that it's necessarily barbie-related but in a somewhat far-fetched way well come to think of it...I mean the beauty ideals as in the world of beauty pageants and such...and she is a young girl...:( Remember all those little girls in the pageant other than Olive? They look like little barbies. Olive was the best though hahaha the dance Grandpa taught her. I feel bad for those other kids the director's commentary tells that they are real-life pageant kids. Their moms bring them into it because their moms want to be kind of like barbie but could never live up to it so they try to put it on their kids or something. Its really sad. Those contests are always judged and hosted by men if you've noticed. They were actual judges and that was an actual host in the movie. So weird. I'm glad a lot of men, i hope most, are not so interested in that stuff anymore...so that young girls will not feel the need to grow up to be a certain way and then when they fail try to force it on their kids who are like what, 7 years old? Many young girls so early in life get this subliminal message that they are supposed to be a certain way (often quite a bit like barbie) so that they will be loved- so that boys will like them the most important thing in the world is that you look and act a certain way (barbie-like?) so eventually out of the flocks of boys you will find a husband who will always "love" you because you look beautiful to him and wow I could go on and on all these crazy ideas that culture/media/society/families have long implanted in little kid's heads. It's sad and still exists I see it regularly though I think we are moving in the right direction and it's not as bad as it used to be, although there are new pressures for both young girls and young boys now that arguably are just as bad. I think i made my point but man i'm gonna watch "Little Miss Sunshine" now i haven't seen it in awhile. Target Women is good and Sarah is amazing, eh? :) Take care, peace.

"If Barbie were a real person, she would be 6' 0", weigh 100 lbs., and wear a size 4. Her measurements would be 39"/19"/33"...
The average woman is 5' 4", weighs 145 lbs., and wears between a size 11-14. Her measurements are approximately 36"/30"/41". There is a fifty-fifty chance that she is on a diet right now."

In high school I read some book about the history of Barbie, and I *believe* she was based on a German porn doll marketed toward men that an elderly American tourist lady really liked. So she's always been a "let's check under her skirt!" doll, is what I'm saying.

thanks for sharing (i genuinely, sincerely mean that). that is disturbing and disgusting. perversion for our very very young girls and very very young boys and impossible anatomical standards. geesh so now they should make pornstar barbie to tell the story of this because i guess in a way what they've been trying to do is program kids to like porn and the sex industry and participate in it in one way or another. so twisted and messed up. what a story. sadly people ate it all up and well now barbie has been every year for at least the last 30 or so the highest-selling doll worldwide. knowledge is power...i will use that story to convince parents to not buy barbies for their kids. my friend went anorexic because she thought she was supposed to look like barbie. we were 11. again thanks for sharing, it's important that people know the full truth about barbie including her origins. did you know she is now made in sweatshops often by little kids mostly girls? and then played with by little kids mostly girls who can afford them. sick sad world people let's change it. i will research her origins furthermore. i bet the companies have tried to cover that bit of the barbie story up but im sure i'll find proof, hard evidence enough. o yeah and of course kids have always done um weird sexual things with them. o my brothers and friends the things they would do...can't blame them i blame the dolls and the people who invented them.

that was common for girls and boys oh my god i saw kids do all kids of things with them. theres nothing weird about you. barbie and ken are just crazy bad for kids and made to be like that like "Jennatar" said a few posts above. i blame the people who invented them they so should never have been invented. urg. but whats the use now i just will be sure my kids have something better to play with.

LOL HAHAHAHHAHA you must be Ken? omg yeah im pretty sure thats normal wow what a sad world though that stupid fucking doll has done that to lots of boys and girls alike i just hope we all have grown up to realize no woman or girl looks like that it is humanly impossible wow barbie was a sick sick creation. maybe if she looked more like real life people? but in any case, she's made of plastic. lol have you heard that song that band Aqua did called "Barbie Girl" lol it pokes fun at kids being attracted to her i bet the band was and it makes fun of barbie and ken dolls too lol. peace. disturbing but funny.

i used to play with barbie, and while i do see that she only reflects only one standard of beauty, i don't think she is the destruction of American women either.
maybe she's actually a tolerance doll to show us that there are anorexics in every career field? ;)

Thanks for being awesome/genius/a great role model for my feminist comedy-loving niece! HAHA about the DHA sweats - YES! Regular barbie should go to a college/university and be proud of that i think most women are pretty proud if they went to college and keep some sort of college thing...i love that its Harvard too haha, and comfortable stuff. I noticed too and was so glad to see you wearing those because not only are they awesome and its you but well it's completely appropriate and perfect for "Regular Lady Barbie." haha what a great concept, a barbie who wears clothes that aren't insane and is like a real, regular lady! I laughed so hard at Regular Ken..."he looks okay." hahaha. Ken never really was much except some supposed hot hunky rich dude it seemed while Barbie as you mentioned has had "a LOT of jobs." why does she never have her college stuff with her? haha. I love the "Regular" ones on the segment (I mean I know its just you guys but yeah you get it). They look like real people, have little vices like wine and TV like real people do, and haven't had 1 million careers/completely unrealistic fantasy-lives (or um physical parts to them...like the hair growing back???) and don't own more resources than all of North America (all those clothes, shoes, and accessories... wow i just thought of how detrimental barbie and her stuff have probably been to the environment...think about it if you haven't...). When are they and the accessories to be released in stores or available online? The environmentally friendly versions not made of plastic and that will support you not Mattel (Mattel is so messed up. They even do sweatshops which of course hurt girls and women the most). Haha. :) Excellent job, barbies have always angered me they made my friend go anorexic when we were both 11. She told me it was because she felt ugly not pretty like barbie is, not skinny enough. And later when she was 16 she begged her mother for breast implants i think again because she idolized barbie...of course she did, her parents put her in front of the TV and her dad was so absent from her life he just bought her a bunch of barbies starting when she was like 2 and a half years old to try to "make up for it." So sad. Finally, at 22, my friend is over all that terrible stuff and un-brainwashed. I've got to show her this...she has a good sense of humor and it will make her happy to see the good work you are doing. The products advertised and sold to women and girls are often extremely harmful, and create this illusion of what the patriarchy wants us to be or have that we can't really ever be or have, or if we can, it certainly won't come about from buying something...money can't buy you what is really important like happiness or as the beatles famously said, love. O man speaking of love do you remember that song by the band Aqua, "Barbie Girl"? lol. "Oh ken, I love you!" that song is a parody of their "love" which is more like a sex-based material thing. and of course barbie and ken were sexual fun things for kids male and female as i remember it i was like WHAT ON EARTH? YOU ARE HAVING THEM DO wha-WHAT???...!!!!******! Kind of messed up if your first idea of what the body/sex/love is supposed to be like is barbie... i think some guy came up with that. What woman actually naturally looks like barbie? Of course we know its physically impossible if you imagine her an actual woman and read the"if barbie was a real woman, she would be..." posted on here, someone posted it and i've seen that before it's somewhat famous i think. Anyway thank you so much, Sarah! We miss you on Target Women, hope you come back (if you want to, of course). I think 1 million or more people miss you and hope you come back (if you want to, of course). Take care and stay true to yourself, cool "regular" lady. :) You are one awesome regular woman - i think i am too and i think most women are, the media makes us look like we aren't but they are just plain wrong :)

I admit I love Barbies, probably more than I did when I was a kid...I wish I had more. I have a couple of the Pregnant Barbies and now I want to go back and buy some of the awesome 90s era ones (I totally remember wanting Gymnast Barbie for her flexi limbs). Also whenever I see a hilariously ironic Barbie I have to buy it.
Oh and that Cut and Style Barbie was dangerous...I remember many a girl giving themselves bad haircuts because they didnt realize that their hair couldnt reattach.
