That's Gay: Bruno

Bruno is finally here but does it help the gay movement or put it one swishy step back?

    • I think what really disappointed me about Bruno was that it did not challenge common perceptions about homophobia or heterosexism.

The Bruno character intentionally is a stereotype of a gay man. The 'homophobes' in the movie however are also stereotypes - religious, rednecks and Republicans. It would have been more interesting if Bruno had exposed the homophobia that exists closer to home, among the people who label themselves as liberal or tolerant. It's easy to laugh/criticise people we don't identify with; if 'we' were exposed as the homophobes we mightn't laugh so loudly.

I don't believe this movie helps the gay movement or puts it one swishy step back - it stagnates it.

    • I thought it was funny, and I hope for the sake of the Movement that it wasn't any "step" for It because intelligent people will know it is a satirical um..poke at the conservative elements in America etc. Just "Vote with your bottom" as I heard one British woman say about movie ticket sales on the news if a movie offends you. (See it or don't $$$) lol
Also, "That's Gay" is awesome! ;)

    • Are we all making Bruno something more than it really is? The Washington Post just released an article claiming that Bruno is a complete flop and fails at establishing a clear point. Isn't the point to laugh?

That's the thing. it's like people were expecting this amazing eye-opening film about homosexuality.

Cohen is the genius who brought us Borat and Da Ali-G Show. Where we really supposed to expect anything different here? This is his bit.

I went in expecting it to be what it is. Him playing a caricature of a gay man. There's no way he was going to be subtle.

Parts of the movie were certainly shocking, but it was still fun.

Just saw it and got exactly what I was expecting (with the exception of one particular swinging object I wasn't banking on). Not a movie about gay empowerment, advocacy, or support. Just a film with dirty humor. Now let's move on.

    • I fit in to the GLTB equation being trans and I all of my gay friends think this looks like the funniest thing they have ever seen. C'mon people be scared of religious hard-liners, not Sasha.

    • Bryan, this is genius. Funny AND provocative. I think you hit it on the head when you said that AMERICA is the joke, and we are the set up. Will the general public see and understand this? At this point, in this day and and age, I hope so. If not, at least those of us who are in on the joke can have a good time at the movies.
And, btw, CONGRATS to Iowa for having huge balls in the middle of the country!!!!

    • Not a surprise, many people I talked to didn't even know Kazakhstan was a country, so I doubt many really got the fact that the USA was the joke in Borat. I think most will get it though.

    • ahahhaa the ending of this one made me legitimately lol

nice transition from insightful and uplifting - "Its America that needs changing not us"

To totally WTF hilarious - "we will never go back to Africa!"

It's okay, I confuse them too. Let's start a new trend together! Middle schoolers will *still* use it every other sentence, but now they'll be all: "hey dude those shoes are TOTALLY gay. where can I get some?"

    • Freaking funny! Makes me think of my Grody to the Max t-shirt from the 80's. Thanks for reminding me and I'm thinking that this phrase needs a resurgence!

That's Gay is so grody! And by grody I mean AWESOME!!

    • Considering that the government of Senegal is turning gays over to actual lynch mobs right now (retro!), going back to Africa at the moment would seem to be rather ill-advised anyway.

Meanwhile, getting shipped back to our collective Gay Homeland of San Francisco is also impractical, because of the rents.

(And Bruno totally IS the new Malcolm X.)
