That's Gay: Prom

bryan_safi
The sacred institution of prom has been threatened by a girl who wants to dance - with another girl! infoMania's Bryan Safi exposes the cruelest commentary about student Constance McMillen and tracks the creation of the most terrifying, life-altering moment in any teenager's life: prom night.

That's Gay is a recurring segment on the weekly television show infoMania. In each episode of That's Gay, Bryan Safi explores gay issues and stereotypes as they are portrayed by the clueless media. For more Bryan visit http://current.com/groups/thats-gay/ and Current TV.

    • Last weekend here in Eureka, CA, we held a "Queer Prom"!! It was awesome: well attended and opened up the space for youth and grown ups alike to come express themselves and have a prom where no one looks at them sideways no matter what they wore or who they danced with. Whats more, we held it at the local Veteran's hall (!?!) and had really good support from the community at large. Straight, queer, silly or ally, everyone was welcome.

It was really nice and showed me that its possible to change perception and create alternatives to the way our dominate systems want us to behave. Everyone who attended was way more respectful than at my high school prom years ago (no police, fights, crazy drunkenness, hate speech) and really appreciated getting to dance to Lady Gaga and feel free....

Score one for the human race!

    • This was awesome up until the end. Buffy reference? Fantastic. Great jokes? Check. But comparing a real prom situation to what is depicted in fiction? Bryan just tried too hard to get his point across there. And in the end, the Carrie reference just made it all seem weird and not funny. I liked the video anyways.

    • the worst thing about this was when there was the 2nd prom, their were 2/3 Special needs children who werent invited to the secret prom because they were different too

go figure, special needs is as bad as been a lesbian to that town :/

      its shameful

And probably illegal. I'm wondering if this can be prosecuted as a hate crime. The kicker is that while gay people do not have some legal protections afforded to other minorities the special needs children do.

    • This is great Bryan, although I think you could have done more with the seedy underbelly of prom itself. Especially the irony of people accusing Constance and her girlfriend of "flaunting their sexuality" and "sticking it in everyone's faces", when, you know, the entire institution of prom is the ultimate flaunting of heteronormative sexuality and couplehood (it really is junior marriage, as you say, and it's about as pure and wholesome as its grown-up counterpart).

The small-minded, mean and petty behavior of all the people, especially the adults, involved in this incident is shocking and upsetting to me. I don't think these people even understand why they are so deeply terrified by a 17-year-old girl.

I was going to say something wise and helpful here but checarina just posted something to completely true that I can only respond by posting 'Seconded!'
and pointing out that That's Gay is awesome.
