Hate to rain on the parade, but Apple pays for a lot of it, but not all. They do pay for 30 Rock, House (which has about nine others), and I don't know about the others. But Apple doesn't pay for all of the scripted/reality TV placement. The talk shows/news shows they don't pay, but scripted TV and characters typically are payed by Apple.

Apple is easier to report on than any other hardware tech company:
1.) Apple really does make good stuff, so it's not just "kool-aid" or propaganda. Good hardware, good design, good software.
2.) They have a VERY narrow product line- just a few products, and minimal variation within each product, so it's easy to describe something new. Take a look at how many laptops HP, Dell and sony make: dozens from each company. Apple only makes three laptops, and three desktops. No confusion, it's easy to pick one.
3.) Apple creates the fanfare by being secretive about products before launch, and holding huge events when they are launched. The other companies realy need to start adopting that marketing technique. Just about everyone knew about the iPad long before launch, but only techies know or care about Microsoft's Natal or Surface.

Ahhhh... I'm not so sure there isn't some relationship between Apple and the media exposure. The products aren't actually that marvellous that it would be believable that those media outlets love showing them THAT much.
Maybe Apple doesn't directly pay for anything, but perhaps it's about advertising agreements or privileged access to their whatever media retail system Apple has going, free samples of selected products to media executives... and so on.
That sort of stealth promotion is an old, old, old,OLD game, and very dirty. - 2 years ago

Exactly the kind of coverage that would turn me off to Apple products. Not to mention that all these media outlets are releasing apps for the device, creating a HUGE conflict of interest.
Thank you for doing this piece.
