    • I'm a fan of Gilbert Gottfried, as I am of French Stewart. For that, I'm
sure I'm a fan of every bona fide comedian who's ever breathed air.
Just because I like jovial people. Comedians study human nature as
I do, being a lifelong Psyche student. They develop an appreciation
for theatre as a result because delivering comedy develops a flair
for acting too. The casting person who likely saw French Stewart
do standup somewhere first probably had a gut feeling he would
perform well in a bit part doing drama, so they cast him in the
original Stargate movie starring Kurt Russel, James Spader, Milly
Avital et al. And it worked. French went on to demo both his talent
for comedy and drama in the movie Clockstoppers. Comedians
doing comedy & drama include Cary Grant, William Shatner, and
a list too long for me to name. Comedy is a play. And you don't
have to be the Bard(Shakespeare) to understand the play's the thing !
Someone once quipped " Amusement is the happiness of people
who can't think " If you'll tolerate my humble opinion, comedy is
the amusement for people who can, and do think." Knock 'em dead, Erin.
That's the general attitude on Will Farell's website Funny or Die
      that I subscribe to.

She should stop that! Eavesdropping is rude. She should make more videos instead!

      Her stuff is fun!

I really don't want to cut it off here and just say she's not funny (though if I was forced to judge by this video alone I wouldn't have much of a choice). But then that would be as if I was lopping myself into the (very forceful) hate group. And I don't want to do that... Such conflicting emotions.... >_>

    • WOW WOW WOW. So much hate! The quality of Infomania viewers has certainly gone down, not the show. To be quite honest, I actually prefer your segment over Sarah's, but of course she was great too. I think your segments have been great and I certainly appreciate your type of humour.

It would be better if people were unsatisfied with your segment to provide some sort of constructive criticism without being outright rude and insulting but I suppose that's just too much to ask. And even though I'm sure that the sole responsibility of Modern Lady does not rest in your hands, it's easier to insult the spokesperson at the front than realize that the show and the segment are bigger than the few individuals we get to see.

Anyway, thanks again and good luck! You're doing a stellar job and I look forward to watching you and the segment every Thursday!

    • I'm sure Erin is a really excellent human and all, but in terms of this show...

If I wanted to watch middle aged women who try way too hard to use deadpan/raunchy humor but then fail awkwardly (and not the hysterical kind of awkward), with a tinge of bratty superiority, I'd go watch Best Week Ever.

Jen Kirkman or Kate Micucci would have been better picks for this segment, if it's going to try to emulate Sarah Haskins. I think we'd all be more receptive to Erin if she wasn't stuck in the shitty sequel/remake of Sarah's old bit, as it sets her up to meet a comedic style and topic that is already trademarked by Haskins.

" middle aged woman " Well, He Haw, He Haw, He Haw. Meaning no disrespect.
(though I have to contain myself from bursting out laughing and quiping some of
my known Sagittarian Moon spontaneity) But, as the jazz song says " Tryin to
make it real.compared to what ? I mean: What do you consider " old age " to be, pardner ? I suppose it's all relative. But Erin appears to be somewhere between
25-35. That's pretty young. Middle age doesn't start now until one's 40s at least.
Back in the primitive ages of humans many infants died at childbirth, and people
were lucky to live to be 40, yet looked like they were 80 comparitively. But when
you realize what realy makes people young are things like a genuine sense of
humor...And that the human race is progressing to the day when we can control
our own longevity...It will make primitive ages of humans being old at 40 look
like the longevity of fruit flies by comparison. Things are not only in a constant
state of evolutionary change, but they're accellerating too. Please don't mind
me bantering on as the English say. You're phrase got my fountain going. I
voted your comment up. Still lol.

I'm absolutely thrilled you're joining the cast of InfoMania. I was missing Target Women terribly, and it's great to see it finally replaced with something equally witty and on point. Your segment is just different enough to be clearly your own, and I can't wait to see where you go with it.

    • Hi Erin,
I was also a big fan of Sarah Haskins's deadpan dry wit, but I also think you will have a good segment. I enjoyed the Larry King one especially. "Gross, Larry!"

Right after I watched your bit on Playboy Moms, didn't I hear our local radio station broadcasting live from the local sex shop, doing boudoir photographs for moms for mother's day. I think you were on to something there.

I hope to see you do a segment on lyrics in mainstream, top-40 pop music (mostly hip-hop), about women or even by women. I don't know about you, but I can't believe the messages we're getting our groove on to these days (and these singers get women, too!). Sergio touched on this topic a few times, and it was hilarious. I'd love to see your take on it, and I imagine you'd dig up some great examples.

Also, don't worry too much about those who choose to voice their disgust at excruciating length (no doubt from their parents' basements). Not everyone finds Ben Hoffman's abrasiveness funny either, but to each their own.

      Look forward to next time!

    • Erin--Do you write your own segments? The reason I ask is that I think your video above (of you telling us about yourself) is great and made me laugh because you seem like you're not afraid to be silly and therefore funny and not the other way around. I think that's what made Haskins a hard seat to fill. I found the concepts of the past two shows interesting, just not funny or challenging enough to show how absurd the topics were. They weren't humorous enough to lift the selections from being a ridiculous annoyance to a comical relief--the point of the show, right? Although, the Betty White interview bits did make me laugh, but I wish you showed her own comments. She was great on SNL last Saturday, but the writers are so horrible that the only thing they could come up with is, oh Betty White the old lady that says scandalous things--we've all seen her shows so why are they constantly squeezing the life out of the same jokes? Anyway, I love the concept of the show and I think you can do a great job, I can't wait to see what comes next.

    • the outrageous things you say might work if they seemed like you came up with it on the spot. but to me it seems like you tried real hard to come up with some absurdly cooky lines, strong them together, and trick us into thinking there is some fluidity to it. as far as originality goes, the whole bit of random crazy one liners, pieced together has been done a lot as of late (anchorman, parks and recreation). naturally you are going to have people who support you, ive read some comments and they are all about telling the hecklers to take it easy. i like ReganMann's praise of you, immediately followed by the question: do you have a boyfriend.

im not going to act like im too attached to infomania, i watch it a lot and i can probably just fast forward through your segment. obviously current is a site where viewer feedback is extremely important, erin you seem concerned that people aren't asking questions in this q and a, but i think a lot of these comments are totally spot on, its good to know that a lot of people can appreciate good, original, comedy and recognize when someone is not funny. then proceed to tell that person in their own amusing, funny ways. its not that people like to see u fail, they just want u to make them laugh, and u don't for a lot of us. the rest of the staff does, but they all have their own unique style, pace, and delivery that makes them funny. for example brett likes to make up funny words, that probably wouldn't be funny delivered by anyone else. conor has his own brand of uptight humor that makes you want to laugh at him, and with him. sergios sarcasm is dry and funny. ben combines irony with insanity, and it works. sarah was incredibly charming, and won you over with her ability to poke fun at silly commercials.

ps: your last segment came on when me and a few buddies were stoned (to current staff: all legally under our respective medical marijuana jurisdictions), and you couldn't get any of us to laugh. for god sakes you had alcopolco gold on ur side u still couldn't win. this is where I'd insert a canned phrase like: "EPIC FAIL" or "FML", but honestly, i never use those phrases. u stink.

pss: can i have ur number now.

What I don't get is this bizarre expectation that people should automatically fit into a show interchangeably like a piece of Lego and then start knocking your socks off with their humour right away.

I honestly found none of the presenters funny or charming when I first saw this show. All of them had to grow on me for a while first. Now all of them have been doing it for quite a while now so they're pretty comfortable in their roles. How in the hell is a new person expected to magically attain that same level of comfort and ease when they're just starting out?
These childish expectations of certain people simply beggar belief.

I wouldn't call it "childish expectations." When you attend a comedy show and the person up on stage is not funny, the audience would find it disappointing and somewhat embarrassed for the guy. I feel the same way here with your comment. I can't agree that a transition period is needed, a period where they have to grow on me first. The warm-up act needs to be as funny as the main act.

"These childish expectations of certain people simply beggar belief"...? i don't understand what the statement means.

how could you not find brett, sarah or ben funny at first? i don't think you truly believe that statement. if u watched infomania for the first time and thought they were all a bunch of idiots why would u watch a second time. i have respect for people who don't find this women funny and speak out about it, because a lot of the praise she gets seems self serving and insincere. at least the people criticizing her are doing so because they like the show.

One well established comedian, Mel Brooks. once said: " No one can ever
be the unedited versions of themselves. Therefore, we often appear to be
at least a little disappointing to others when they see the real person
compared to the image they expected of us " Some folks will always be
more difficult to mind tickle into laughter simply because of their own
psychology. It's important to realize that's the reality all comedians face.
They can't MAKE you laugh. You can only lead a horse to water, you can't
make him drink. The ability to laugh at absurdity, sarcasm hinting at irony,
someone making a face, all comes as the natural consequence of being
more perceptively open which requires active mindfulness. Folks who are
more passive are a tougher room. The only reason why my impressions of
Rodney Dangerfield have not failed to make most laugh is not so much
because I studied all his mannerisms and duplicated them so accurately...
It's because the folks I exposed my immitation to simply liked me to begin
with, which make it easy. After being around them long enough, their image
of me vanished, and I didn't have to be the edited version of myself because
they simply accepted me for how I interacted with them becoming familiar.

For whatever the reason, it's true what's said about humans: " We can
never laugh at people we don't like " meaning we're not like, again the
psychology of the affectation. When ever folks unconsciously sense the
personality of a comic to more resemble theirs, they're more open to them.
Laughter is a more advanced degree of emotional affect than smiling,
and why the Germans have cognately similar spellings for both laughen,
and lacheln. That's why many journals of science are written in German.
They have more psychological precision in their language. We never
expose our inner selves to others in either smiling or laughing unless
we feel so comfortable with them that all our defensive screens are down,
so that we're open to them tickling us with their wit. Groucho Marx had
them so trained, that they all acted like they were high around him, and
laughed as he opened his mouth even before he said anthing simply
because they anticipated no mater what he said they were going to laugh
anyway. Why ? As simple as this might sound, simply because they liked him.

If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, then humor is in the ear (and mind)
of the beholder too. Lighten up. I had to get high for years and years, then
say something totaly off the wall to get people to laugh. And even then they
usualy had to be in such a state of euphoria they were primed to laugh at
anything. But after practice, those with a genuine sense of humor and
appreciation for it start to develop their own innate style of what's funny.
A lot has to do with the delivery. Groucho Marx had such a well known
style of humor, that whether he pretended to insult them with wit or not
they always laughed anyway as if they too were high, just because they grew
to like him talking. People are funny which is why comedians are humorous.
You can't hear her voice tone delivering those lines, nor can you see her
facial expression either simultaneously as she delivered that. But experiencing
both cues is an essential part of the experienced of being amused by
comedians. Every comedian probes a room to sense where the audience's
tickle spot is. That's why live commedy, like live plays, are the thing.
It must be difficult to wing all that in the electronic age w/o interactive, live
audience particpation, as a commedian would find on stage in a theatre.

I guess I didn't fully understand what modern lady will be about in just one segment. It does seem as broad and full of potential as Target Women. I was just wondering what the... angle is? I kinda like how it showed how restrictive media is regarding women even when escaping the traditional...

I'm not a hater, but if you'll permit me to answer your question with sincerity,
that both are different personalities, with the comedy expressed as their
own natural style. I studied Psychology at the S.U.of N.Y, And am involved
with comedy myself, (though I would only volunteer to be a clown at the
birthday parties of kids-they're not a tough room) If you read my studied
reply comment posted above, hopeful you can absorb a summary of the
comedy of psyche 101, if I wasn't too obtuse. Comedy is a totaly social thing.
The longer they see Erin's style of comedy, the more they'll like it's style
simply because they'll grow more comfortable with the exposure. Erin did
welcome everyone who's in L.A. to drop by the UCB theatre to see her live.
A comedian is like a doctor because laughter is good medicine, and not
simply because it produces an alkaline chemical response that balances
the PH in the blood and tissues. But because it's levity unburdens the soul
from the depressing weight of mundane life with some safe emotional release.
Like Sting's (Gordon Sumner) song says: " We're spirits in a material world "

Yah, but Erin has really clear skin and symmetric feminine bone structure. She doesn't have to be funny, she's pretty. Which sucks because she's going to catch hell for it. Maybe she should write a segment about it. Oh wait, most people are ugly. Not going to build a whole lot of sympathy there.

This is just a clusterfuck. Sarah was kind of ugly, in the "actual human being" kind of way, and her jaded, jaded, bottomless pit of faux enthusiasm and dark, jaded sense of humor endeared us to her.

So now Erin is going to have to prove that she has suffered due to our insane culture of stupidity, is sick and f**king tired of bullshit, and then wrap it all up in a Colbert-esque faux-support.

Sarah leaves some huge shows to fill. Er... shoes.

I'm basically just paraphrasing it. A good example would be Conan when he moved time slots. I may just be a nobody, but I started watching current back from day one. And to reference your comment below about starting your own show, isn't that what this station was supposed to be about in regards to "user created content" and showing that on tv instead of elbowing out participation from users in lieu of of now just showcasing your egos? Yes. Current TV originated with VC2 as our primary source of programming for our TV content, but it was never intended to be exclusive. We've expanded over time with more original TV content, including infoMania, Rotten Tomatoes Show, Vanguard, SuperNews, and many more. We have participatory elements on many of our shows, and the plan is to expand on those throughout 2010.

erin, keep up the good work. i like your style, you fit right in with the infomania family, and i'm excited to see more of your segment.

    • Erin, I think your reception would have been far warmer had you been hosting your own segment as opposed to a spinoff of Target Women. I do hope you find your own place within the show, but I can almost guarantee that won't happen through Modern Lady.

Oh I know exactly what you're saying. I'm going to see if I can't figure out a way to do a feminist-ish segment on something relating to men or maybe animals. I think that would help me be different than another lady. We ladies always be seeming exactly the same!

    • I smell staying power... Also there's something refreshing about seeing a staff member passive aggressively heckle some rand-o on this site in the comments section. haha. congrats, good addition to the show!

    • Wow I am shocked by how many people are sending hate comments, no one likes anything new but sometimes there is a need for something fresh another person's chance to show the world what they got! I like you Erin you seem like you have something to say in a funny way so its not boring. Here is my question

How do you deal with all theses idiots judging your work? Do you search social numbers lol.

    • while trying to read through the comments, "Tyra Talks Strip Clubs" popped up and took over 5...yep, 5 times, courtesy of 'current'. new practice?
anyway, i found this segement lame, and the idea that she will come into her own after a few shows, and to give her a chance is insulting to viewers. this is not an audition show--should have all been done before giving her airtime.
it is coincidental that the two strong supporters who posted comments have been members of 'current' for 20 days, and another for 7 days (welcome!), so maybe she has a following that she brought with her. (yeah, i check posters 'history'). does anyone know what happened to "max and jason"?

Yeah they put the videos on auto play for some reason. I would definitely let feedback@current.com know that you're annoyed with the player.

As far as me being "insulting to viewers", that is something that the web designers will not be able to help you with, so make sure to always just remind me that I am not what you want.

Wow, so many questions. I'm sure I'm not going to get to all of them in a video response,so I might as well address them here. Your first question "Can I go somewhere else?". The answer, is unfortunately, no. I am on a contract here and unless I die or the network goes under, you're kind of stuck with me (don't put out a hit, people will know it was you! ). So I guess your options are to either close your eyes when my piece is on or switch to Pat Robertson (it's so nice to have options, right?). Also, just so you can put this on your "things you don't like list", I've been writing jokes for the entire show for the last two months and continue to do so. So just to be safe, you should probably just hate everything.

I auditioned for the spot fair and square and I guess they liked that I had something different to offer, but comedy is so subjective and I totally get that you hate the words that come out of my mouth. So, please write important people at the network and tell them they made a mistake and get me fired. You will feel much better about yourself if you can get these issues to higher ups who can do something about me. Putting them in the comments of a segment that's supposed to be a Q&A is not helping your cause.
