Modern Lady: Beer Ads

Erin_Gibson
Everybody loves beer - men, women, children with fake IDs. But beer companies don't want one of these groups to enjoy their beer: women. Modern Lady Erin Gibson is on the case of how beer companies like Miller, Budweiser, and Heineken have gone from depicting women in commercials as eye candy hanging out with Spuds MacKenzie to the target of aggression and humiliation.

In each episode of Modern Lady, Erin Gibson explores the often-conflicting ways in which today's media tells women to work, love, and be ladies.

infoMania is a half-hour satirical news show that airs on Current TV. The show puts a comedic spin on the 24-hour chaos and information overload brought about by the constant bombardment of the media. Hosted by Conor Knighton and co-starring Brett Erlich, Erin Gibson, Ben Hoffman, Bryan Safi and Sergio Cilli, the show airs on Thursdays at 10 pm Eastern and Pacific Times and can be found online at http://current.com/infomania/ or on Current TV. • LOL Loved it, Erin! Your segment is only getting better!

They invented Feminism! WTF?!?!?!?!?! And yeah, it's only something that we, stupid beings, need to be kept occupied. Feminism changes millions of lives for better all over the world!

Seriously, women should boycott beer companies. All of their selling, humilliating, pornifying women is awful. Besides, their philosophy of violence, dumbifying, and turning people numb as if getting drunk was the greatest experience one could have in life is killing our culture, it's turning kids into alcoholics without any perspective of what it is to have fun, of really enjoying something while being awake... that's what life should be all about.

Women of the world, unite! Let's homebrew!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Its not that beer companies hate women, its that beer companies hate how women want equality with men in ways that only are beneficial to women.

These beer companies only show how women would be treated if the US culture actually considered and put into action womens' conceived notion of equality.

There is a scene in the film Ghost Dog that explores this notion very well...

A gangster is rushing his shot comrade to a means of escape after their entire family has been wiped out by Ghost Dog...as they are speeding, a cop, who happens to be a woman, pulls them over. She requests license and registration. The driver complies and asks why he was speeding. The driver replies his friend has just been shot and needs to get to a hospital as his life is bleeding out of his body. The cop, stubbornly asks what the situation is and begins calling for backup, as the friend continues to bleed to death...she, instead of offering police escort as someone has requested or at least letting them go as she SEES what was said is happening, goes to the other side of the car to speak to the man bleeding. The guys lets down the window and blows her brains out and demands they get the fuck out of there.

There conversation goes something like this...

Gangster Driver: "Are you crazy? You just shot a broad..."

Bleeding Gangster: "You know what? You're a sexist, chauvinistic piece of shit, you know that?"

Gangster Driving: "Why you say that? I'm just saying its wrong to just kill a woman like that."

Bleeding Gangster: "I didn't shoot a woman. I shot a cop. She wanted to be equal....I made her equal."

My point is, beer is not about men or women, but within it lies a culture. In that culture, women have a certain depiction and role. Deviation from that, abruptly changes the culture. That change, if it is to be positive, takes time.

"Miss Peyton has conducted extensive research into the origins of beer for a new book and reports that a woman's touch was found on beer throughout the ages."

"Nearly 7,000 years ago in Mesopotamia and Sumeria, so important were their skills that they were the only ones allowed to brew the drink or run any taverns.... And in almost all ancient societies beer was also then considered to be a gift from a goddess, never a male God.... Women were the exclusive brewers in Norse society and all equipment by law remained their property....In England ale was traditionally made in the home by women. They were known as brewsters or ale-wives and the sale of the drink provided a valuable income for many households.... But by the start of the late 18th century and the Industrial Revolution, new methods of making beer meant women's contribution slowly started to decline and be forgotten, until now."

Womens' contribution has not declined. It is simply transmitted differently in a different time and place. It is, overall, pretty much the same though. It is simply womens' acceptance of this role that has changed.

    • They don't like black women either. When was the last time you saw a black woman in a beer ad? I shouldn't worry, yet. I'm only 19 and have no interest in alcohol. It smells terrible.

...we have an ad down under that shows when the football is on, it's a brut aftershave ad...with the catchline, brutally male...this type of neanderthal advertising is everywhere, and it's prolific down here...what do you do, men run ad agencies down here...

    • What kind of commercial quality do you expect from products of such caliber as Bud Light and Coors Light?

In the same context, when was the last time a man appeared in a Swiffer commercial oo-ing over his new mop/duster thing.

Commercials are commonly sexist, but not all of them.

    • I have the opportunity for so many jokes but I will skip them for the sake of seriousness.

She is right, all the commercials surrounding beer are stereotyping women and or humiliating them, grant it they are hillarious commercials but what is the true reason? Is it because they think beer is a mans only drink? Frankly beer tastes like crap to me unless its a bud light lime but I'd buy a chick a beer for sure if she wanted one.

Maybe women need to do their own alcohol commercials stereotyping men as fat beer drinking smelly wife beaters? IDK but I'm sure you can fight back

"Is it because they think beer is a mans only drink?"

No, it's because men buy an enormous quantity of beer sold. It's marketing for your audience. Would you expect toy companies to make sophisticated, intelligent advertisements when marketing toys for little kids? Not really, you expect very simple ones with lots of visual of other kids playing with the toy and looking happy...

    • Colin_McCabe:

Clearly my example involving age has confused you on the point I was making. So I'll say it again.

Beer is largely consumed by males more than females. If you are going to target an audience to appeal to, you would pick the one that makes you the most profit and you would most likely adapt your advertising to fit that.

Get what I was trying to say now? -_-'

Clearly then you misunderstood the video article itself, as she was saying women are not in beer ad's unless they are being made fun of in some way.
Women still consume enough beer, making them a part of the audience so why are they not featured in the same type of beer ads as men?
If a beer ad targeted women it would increase sales there as well, its dumb to exclude them

(But I must say doesn't the chick in the football commercial cream the guy in the next play?)
