"That's Gay" Salutes Gay Reality-Show Judges

bryan_safi
Bryan Safi's "That's Gay" segment discovers one realm where gay men are proudly (and loudly) overrepresented - judging reality shows. From Bruno Taglioni on "Dancing With The Stars" to Adam Shankman on "So You Think You Can Dance," from Michael Kors on "Project Runway" to Derek J on "Hair Battle Extravaganza," every self-respecting reality show needs someone gay rocking the gavel. Friendly warning to members of our live studio audience: Don't mention border collies or Bryan will toss you from his salon. (You know, the room next to the conservatory. Oh, just watch already.)

That's Gay is a recurring segment on the weekly television show infoMania. In each episode of That's Gay, Bryan Safi explores gay issues and stereotypes as they are portrayed by the clueless media. For more Bryan visit http://current.com/groups/thats-gay/ and Current TV.

infoMania is a half-hour satirical news show that airs on Current TV, now shot live in front of a studio audience. The show puts a comedic spin on the 24-hour chaos and information overload brought about by the constant bombardment of the media. Hosted by Conor Knighton and co-starring Brett Erlich, Erin Gibson, Ben Hoffman, Bryan Safi and Sergio Cilli, the show airs on Thursdays at 11/10c on Current TV.

    • I just don't understand the biting wit and insightful comedy is completely lost, don't they know better than to introduce a laugh track/ live studio audience format.

You would think so, which is why I assumed the laugh track was a one time gag...I'm hoping a staff member will confirm that it was a joke and then assuage my fear that it will never happen for permanent reals.

    • For those of you complaining about the audience....I don't think it was intended to be permanent. It was probably meant to go with the segment as the audience is often very overbearing in reality shows. It's being tongue in cheek, comparing Bryan to a reality show judge.

Aw, really? That blows. I haven't been watching the entire show because I've been to busy to keep up with it. Like I said in another comment, if the live audience thing is permanent and not a joke...eww.

P.S. I find Modern Lady unwatchable. No offense to Erin Gibson, I just don't see the wit. Her jokes are obvious and unoriginal...

    • I completely agree. The laughing is awful. It also appears that he's playing up to the audience which just looks ridiculous as opposed to funny. And he can't keep a straight face! Other than that, Bryan's awesome.

    • michael kors is so funny on project runway, and he doesn't even try to be!
here are some of his direct quotes from past judgings:

      - She looks like Barefoot Appalachain Lil' Abner Barbie.
      - She looks like a paper brioche.
      - It's like an explosion in a sequin factory!
      - Next thing you know, it's big button earrings and you're on 'The Facts of Life.'
      - It's a little Shirley McClaine when she played a hooker with a heart of gold.
      - That was so Paris hooker 50's.
      - How predictable for you to chose Greek and Roman drapery. I mean come on!
      - It looks like Carmen Miranda on acid.

    • You know many of those judges can be controversal, case in point: Jason Gardiner from 'Dancing on Ice', where his comments to former swimmer Sharron Davies in February did cause public outrage, he later apologized.

    • maybe if we all say we love the live audience, it will be taken away. since we've all said that we hate it and it's still here, you know.
i wonder what will happen next week...

    • This is... awful :(. What has happened to my beloved Infomania? The live audience makes less than no sense, the miking is awful... and even Safi's usually brilliant jokes largely fall flat because of the required pandering to the live audience.

A media commentary show is not a stage performance.

      I'm nearly heartbroken.
