Brett, once again you missed the entire story in the movie. Mark Wahlberg's portrayal of Mickey Ward was perfected in the fact that Mickey was never the kind of boxer that wanted to shine outside of the ring. He never tried to be the center piece of anything unless he was inside of the ring. Sylvester Stallone's 'Rocky's' ruined the persona of what a boxer really is.He sold us a myth that it seems to me you're using in evaluating Wahlberg's brilliant performance in this movie.
Mickey Ward is just who Mark Wahlberg made him out to be in this movie. Contrary to your assessment of his role, he really didn't miss a beat. Then too, I can understand why you see differently if you were probably mediocre at best in sports while growing up as a child. You have no point of reference.

The Fighter, in my opinion, was a great film. This is a true story of a blue collar guy from Lowell, MA. He still lives there with Charlene! The Acting was superb, especially Christian Bale, Mickey O'Keefe (who is actually a real Lowell Police officer), and what about Micky's sisters, amazing! I grew up right near the area, and all the accents are spot on. The shooting style, I thought was a great choice as well. Especially the HBO Boxing style fight scenes. All and all a fine flick, Wahlberg is an amazing producer.

I saw the movie....really liked it.....and think your disection of the movie was pretty much spot on. I think this movie is a lesson about your central character not needing to be the strongest link. You just need to tell a story worth telling.

Great review guys. I think I'm going to have to go see this movie thanks to you two. A good performance by Bale was one thing I kinda knew this movie would have. just good to hear he did such a great job. I'll be seeing this movie for his character and performance alone.
On the other hand. Sorry Marky Mark but I think The Other Guys will always be my favorite movie you're in. You're just too funny as Ferrell's sidekick! Who knew?!
